A global investment firm is seeking a senior-level tax lawyer (SVP / Director) to join its international tax team. The role is based in a major U.S. financial hub and will initially focus on supporting expanding U.S. investment activities across private equity, venture capital, and other related strategies, as well as key strategic and corporate initiatives.
The position is suited to an experienced tax lawyer able to operate independently on complex matters, collaborate closely with investment and legal teams, and provide technically robust, commercially pragmatic tax advice throughout the investment lifecycle.
Key ResponsibilitiesTransactional & Investment Tax
- Advise on U.S. federal, state, and local tax aspects of investments, acquisitions, disposals, financings, and related matters, including oversight of external advisors.
- Support U.S. and cross‑border tax structuring, including transactions involving Europe, the Middle East, and other jurisdictions.
- Partner with deal and legal teams from early structuring to execution and exit, delivering clear and practical tax guidance.
- Advise on tax matters relating to investment funds, co‑investment vehicles, managed accounts, and SPVs.
- Support fundraising by advising on investor‑related tax issues, fund documentation, and side letters.
- Address tax considerations for a diverse institutional investor base, including non-U.S., tax‑exempt, and sovereign investors.
- Monitor and advise on U.S. implications of international tax developments, including regimes such as BEAT, CAMT, Pillar Two, and withholding tax frameworks.
- Coordinate with global tax colleagues and external advisors to ensure alignment on cross‑border issues.
- Support tax risk management, including review of complex or sensitive positions.
- Provide oversight support on U.S. tax compliance matters and assist with audits, inquiries, and information requests in partnership with external advisors.
- Contribute to internal tax policies, governance processes, and reporting to internal stakeholders.
- Support initiatives relating to portfolio company tax positions and strategies that are relevant to the firm’s investment plans and broader tax posture.
- Serve as a key tax contact for U.S.
-based investment professionals and other internal stakeholders; help develop external advisor relationships. - Build strong working relationships across legal, finance, compliance, HR, communications, and operations teams.
- Provide informal guidance and support to junior team members when appropriate.
Required
- Qualified tax lawyer (JD with strong tax emphasis; LL.M. in Tax preferred).
- At least ~7 years’ post‑qualification experience at a leading law firm and/or in‑house within asset management, private equity, or financial services.
- Strong foundation in U.S. corporate and partnership tax, with cross‑border structuring experience.
- Ability to manage multiple work streams and deliver high‑quality, commercially informed advice.
- Clear communicator with sound judgment and a collaborative working style.
- Prior in‑house experience at an alternative asset manager or institutional investor.
- Exposure to international tax matters relevant to global investment platforms.
- Experience working with non‑U.S. investors and cross‑border fund structures.
