Senior Tax Underwriter – Transaction Risk Insurance (TRI)
About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Tax Underwriter to join our Transaction Risk Insurance (TRI) team, specializing in Tax Liability insurance across the U.S. and Canada. This role provides senior underwriting expertise for complex, high-value tax-related risks arising from M&A and standalone transactions. You will lead technical analysis, risk structuring, pricing, and negotiation, while operating with delegated authority and serving as a subject matter expert within the TRI Tax portfolio.
This is a senior individual contributor role with defined autonomy, technical authority, and direct influence on portfolio quality and profitability.
Core Underwriting
- Lead the assessment, structuring, and negotiation of complex tax liability risks
- Evaluate legal and tax documentation to identify exposures and develop coverage solutions
- Price and bind risks within delegated underwriting authority
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external tax counsel to ensure thorough risk evaluation
- Maintain complete, audit-ready underwriting files and accurate system records
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters
- Manage the full lifecycle of Tax Liability submissions from intake through policy issuance
- Analyze domestic and cross-border tax exposures and transaction structures
- Draft, review, and negotiate bespoke policy wordings and endorsements
- Engage directly with brokers, clients, and tax advisors on complex technical matters
- Support portfolio analytics, product refinement, and underwriting governance initiatives
- Monitor tax legislation and market developments to inform underwriting strategy
- Represent TMHCC’s Tax Liability capabilities in broker and client meetings
Required
- 7+ years of tax liability, transaction risk, or specialty underwriting experience
- Deep knowledge of U.S. federal and state taxation
- Experience underwriting complex M&A or structured transaction risks
- Strong analytical, legal, and technical writing skills
- Experience working directly with external tax counsel and advisors
- Ability to operate independently with delegated authority
- Energy tax credit expertise
- Canadian tax exposure knowledge
- Law degree, CPA, or tax/finance advanced degree
- Prior TRI or W&I / tax liability insurance experience
- Hybrid work environment (3 days in office)
- Occasional travel for broker/client meetings

Compensation & Pay Transparency (New York)The pay range for this position is $124,900 – $275,400, which includes geographic adjustments, where applicable. The pay range is the range TMHCC in good faith believes is the range of compensation for this role at the time of this posting. The hired applicant will be offered pay within the entire range based on the candidate’s geographic location, qualifications, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
