North America Equity Desk Strategist – Metals & Mining Vertical Role Summary
We are seeking a Desk Strategist (7+ years’ experience) to help grow our Global Metals, Mining and Steel Equities franchise. The role sits on the North American Trading Desk and includes working closely with our #1-ranked Metals & Mining Equity Research team in addition to working with sales, trading and banking. Responsibilities include coordinating analyst marketing schedules in addition to driving secondary trading idea generation and aligning/assisting coverage with our global generalist sales, trading, research, ECM and banking teams.
The role will also include close coordination with our top-ranked London-based Metals & Mining Specialist Sales team.
- Product: Cash equities (and equity‑linked solutions as applicable), sector/thematic idea flow, corporate access, research distribution and liaise with banking and ECM.
- Clients: North American institutions (e.g., long‑only, hedge funds, pension/sovereign, endowments, family offices) as well as internal Sales, Trading, Banking and ECM teams.
- Own and expand a portfolio of North American institutional accounts for Global Metals, Mining and Steel equities.
- Generate trading and advisory revenue through differentiated idea origination, sector/thematic positioning, and timely market color.
- Partner with execution/trading to deliver high‑quality outcomes on block/illiquid names and event‑driven flows.
- Assist banking and ECM with sector transactions.
- Provide clients with actionable market updates, flows, technical, and event catalysts across the Global Metals, Mining and Steel sector.
- Distribute research effectively and translate it into tradeable recommendations and votes; tailor messaging by client style (LO vs HF, fundamental vs quant).
- Identify cross‑market relative value, sector rotations, index/rebalance implications, and macro‑to‑micro linkages relevant to the sector.
- Help coordinate corporate access (NDRs, reverse roadshows, conferences, 1x1s) aligned with client priorities and firm objectives.
- Work with Research, IBD/ECM, and country coverage to position the franchise around key corporates and event calendars.
- Assist in driving Research votes with top‑tiered equity clients to maintain our #1 Extel rating in North American Metals & Mining Equity Research.
- Provide marketing feedback and market/trading color to Sales, Trading, ECM and Banking.
- Contribute to cross‑sector desk strategy, including coverage segmentation, product initiatives, and marketing content.
- Operate within all applicable policies and regulatory frameworks (e.g., information barriers, communications/recordkeeping).
- Ensure appropriate handling of sensitive information; escape issues promptly and adhere to best execution and suitability standards as applicable.
- Maintain accurate client records and activity tracking in CRM systems.
- 7+ years of experience in sales, research or trading (cash equities preferred; buyside or sellside) with demonstrated revenue contribution.
- Knowledge of the Global Metals, Mining and Steel sector and key regional market structures (liquidity, trading hours, local conventions).
- Proven ability to communicate investment views clearly and credibly with sophisticated institutional clients.
- Track record of building networks and collaborating across time zones.
- Bachelor’s degree required; relevant licenses/registrations as required for the jurisdiction (or ability to obtain promptly).
- Client relationship management and consultative selling mindset.
- Strong product knowledge: cash equities, sector/thematic positioning, corporate access, events/catalysts.
- High‑quality written and verbal communication (market notes, trade rationale, meeting prep).
- Comfortable working across various time zones as needed.
