POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

The Director of Finance is a key member of the senior leadership team responsible for the overall financial management, compliance, and fiscal health of the organization. This role oversees all financial systems, including budgeting, reporting, audits, cash flow management, internal controls, grant financial management, and regulatory compliance.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Finance partners closely with executive leadership to provide strategic financial guidance, support organizational decision-making, ensure financial sustainability, and maintain compliance with all applicable financial regulations and reporting requirements.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

Financial Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead financial management and strategic planning for the organization.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to the COO, Chief Program Officer (CPO), CEO, and senior leadership team.
  • Analyze organizational financial performance and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Support long‑term financial planning and sustainability initiatives.
  • Review contracts and advise leadership on financial implications and risks.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the annual organizational budget.
  • Oversee program, grant, and contract budgets.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and variance analyses.
  • Support department leaders in budget planning and development.
  • Prepare and submit documentation for budget modifications and revisions.
Financial Operations & Reporting
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Present financial reports and recommendations to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Analyze balance sheet accounts, general ledger activity, and financial trends.
  • Ensure accurate accounting and tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation.
Compliance, Audits & Internal Controls
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and oversee annual financial audits.
  • Manage IRS Form 990 preparation and New York State Consolidated Fiscal Reporting (CFR) requirements.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and regulatory agencies.
Cash Flow & Banking Management
  • Monitor organizational cash flow and maintain financial stability.
  • Oversee banking relationships and financial service providers.
  • Develop and maintain cash flow projections.
  • Recommend strategies to improve liquidity and financial performance.
Payroll, Benefits & Retirement Oversight
  • Oversee payroll processes in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws and payroll regulations.
  • Oversee retirement plan administration, including 403(b) compliance and reporting.
  • Monitor payroll‑related financial reporting and reconciliations.
Grant & Contract Financial Management
  • Oversee financial management and tracking of grants and contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with funding requirements and grant restrictions.
  • Prepare and review grant‑related financial reports and documentation.
  • Support program leadership with grant budgeting and reporting needs.
Systems & Organizational Improvement
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, controls, and workflows.
  • Support organizational transitions, including billing processes and system upgrades.
  • Ensure effective integration and collaboration across departments.
