The Director of Finance & Accounting provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for all finance, accounting, and financial operations of the organization. Reporting to the Chief Financial Operations Officer, this position is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements, effective stewardship of organizational assets, and the development of financial strategies that support the organization's mission, growth, and long-term sustainability.
The Director of Finance & Accounting serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and department leaders on financial planning, performance, risk management, and operational decision-making. The role oversees all accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, financial planning and analysis, grants and restricted fund management, audits, tax and regulatory filings, cash flow management, and internal controls.
The Director of Finance & Accounting leads and develops the finance team, drives continuous improvement in financial systems and processes, and fosters a culture of accountability, transparency, collaboration, and service excellence. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that financial resources are managed effectively to advance the organization’s strategic priorities and maximize mission impact.
Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Strategy- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability
- Serve as strategic advisor to the CFOO on planning, performance, resource allocation, and risk management
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support organizational decision‑making
- Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities for efficiency and revenue enhancement
- Develop KPIs and leadership reports that provide clear insight into organizational performance
- Direct all accounting operations: general ledger, accounts payable, revenue, payroll, and close processes
- Ensure timely, accurate financial statements prepared in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain and improve accounting systems, policies, and procedures
- Oversee cash flow management, liquidity planning, banking relationships, and reserve management
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department leaders
- Develop financial forecasts, multi-year projections, and scenario models
- Monitor performance against budget and provide variance analysis
- Support leadership in evaluating program financial performance and resource allocation
- Oversee grant accounting, compliance, reporting, and stewardship of restricted funds
- Ensure proper allocation of expenses among programs, grants, and funding sources
- Monitor grant expenditures and ensure compliance with donor and funding requirements
- Collaborate with development staff on grant proposals, budgets, and financial reporting
- Provide leadership with timely analysis of restricted funding and grant utilization
- Coordinate annual financial audits and prepare required schedules and documentation
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting nonprofit organizations
- Oversee preparation and filing of IRS Form 990 and required regulatory reports
- Establish and continuously improve internal controls, financial policies, and risk management practices
- Partner with external auditors, tax advisors, and consultants as needed
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 3–4 finance and accounting professionals
- Oversee the full employee performance lifecycle: goal-setting, evaluations, coaching, and development
- Manage external financial consultants, auditors, and service providers
- Lead process improvements, system enhancements, and automation to strengthen the finance function
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required
- Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, Accounting, or Finance) preferred
