Position: Principal, Risk Manager - Residential Real Estate (AASP)
Location: New York

Position Overview

AASP Risk, an indirect wholly‑owned subsidiary of Apollo Management Holdings, manages securitized products and structured finance assets sourced and serviced by ATLAS SP Partners and Apollo’s Asset Backed Lending business. The role is a senior risk‑management position focused on the residential mortgage warehouse portfolio across all asset‑backed activities.

The Role

The Principal will serve as the lead risk manager for the residential mortgage warehouse portfolio, performing both asset‑level and counter party‑level credit reviews, evaluating fraud, reputational and collateral considerations, and continuously monitoring mortgage finance exposures. Reporting to the co‑heads of Asset Backed Finance Risk Management, the Principal will work closely with ATLAS and Apollo credit professionals, other risk leaders within the AASP Risk team, and key partners.

Responsibilities
  • Underwrite risk in each transaction, including evaluating financing structures, asset risk, originator and servicer risk profiles, reputational risks, collateral control risks, stress testing, analytics, and market intelligence.
  • Make risk decisions and act as an investor to approve transactions within delegated authority.
  • Challenge the business, substantiate support or dissent for deals, and work with deal teams on structural improvements to shift a transaction from "no" to "maybe/yes".
  • Participate in the deal underwriting process from inception through the transaction lifecycle, with greater involvement for under‑performing or high‑risk asset classes.
  • Collaborate with Legal to ensure loan agreements accurately reflect deal structure, economic terms, and asset waterfalls.
  • Work closely with Legal, Due Diligence, Compliance, and Treasury on reputational, franchise, fraud, double‑pledging, liability, and liquidity considerations.
  • Present risk concerns and due diligence findings, make risk recommendations, and answer questions of Investment Committee members or other senior stakeholders.
  • Produce thorough documentation, including market, borrower, structure, and collateral analysis to support recommendations and sensitivity testing.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Strong subject‑matter knowledge of multiple asset classes in the consumer and commercial sectors, including unsecured consumer, renewables, credit cards, student loans, and exposure to less liquid asset classes such as venture debt or SME lending.
  • Prior experience as an approver of credit and responsibility for critical decisions with significant financial impact.
  • Experience underwriting corporates from a fundamental credit perspective and reviewing loan agreements.
  • Ability to work alongside 1

    LOD to underwrite highly structured warehouse (loan) facilities.
  • Strong foundation in risk with solution‑oriented, commercial‑awareness perspective to balance risk discipline and control.
  • Excellent analytical skills with multi‑asset class experience and capability to build risk‑management tools for portfolio governance.
  • Extensive financial analysis, modelling skills, and expertise in credit risk management, risk metrics and systems.
  • Experience in a large bank or financial institution with structured credit training programs.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to present complex risk concepts to investment committees.
  • Ability to incorporate diverse information sources to stay ahead of market and economic trends and evaluate portfolio impact.

Salary & Bonus Information

The base salary range for this position is listed above. This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus based on personal, team, and firm performance. Compensation ranges are based on several factors including job function, level, and geographic location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed here.
