Job Overview

The Underwriting Manager will lead and oversee the underwriting team responsible for the evaluation, underwriting, and risk assessment for the purchase of various small balance commercial receivables from reputable originators. This role is responsible for managing the group’s day-to-day operations, serving as the first line of defense for elevated underwriting decisions on a deal-by-deal basis, and holding the team accountable for executing bespoke programs with originators.

The Manager will ensure that all transactions align with the Company’s risk tolerance and underwriting standards while developing and mentoring a high-performing team of underwriters. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in credit analysis and team leadership, with specific experience in revenue-based finance products, small balance commercial loans, or other alternative lending products.

Job Requirements

  • Hold the underwriting team accountable for executing bespoke programs with originators, ensuring deal structures, pricing, and risk parameters are consistently met across all originator relationships.
  • Coach, develop, and mentor the team of underwriters, conducting regular performance reviews and identifying training needs to build a high-performing credit team.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Credit and business team to establish and refine underwriting guidelines, credit policies, and risk appetite frameworks for the portfolio.
  • Oversee documentation and reporting standards across the team, ensuring all credit decisions are well-supported, audit-ready, and compliant with company standards.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and team productivity metrics, identifying trends in delinquency or risk concentration, and implementing process enhancements as needed.
  • Stay informed of market trends and changes in the industry, proactively updating underwriting practices and training the team to ensure the Company remains competitive and effective.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for originator partners on underwriting matters, ensuring consistent communication and execution of program-specific requirements.
Required Experience & Skills

  • 3+ years of experience directly managing and developing a team of underwriters or credit analysts.
  • Strong understanding of financial statement analysis, including cash flow analysis, revenue trends, and key financial ratios.
  • Demonstrated experience in credit underwriting and risk assessment, with a proven ability to evaluate the creditworthiness of small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Familiarity with revenue based finance and other non-traditional lending instruments.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven credit decisions.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage team workloads, competing deadlines, and multiple originator programs simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams, originator partners, and senior management, and to present credit recommendations and portfolio updates clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with underwriting platforms or credit analysis software.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of credit risk, cash flow analysis, financial statements, and underwriting principles.
