The Senior Associate of Public Credit Tax will work closely with the Vice President of Public Credit Tax Reporting and members of the tax team to support tax provision processes (including excise taxes), and tax and information reporting for our public credit funds that are regulated investment companies (“RICs”). One of our public credit funds, Ares Capital Corporation (ARCC), is the largest and most established publicly traded business development company (“BDC”) in the United States.

ARCC invests primarily in debt and non-control equity investments and maintains investments in various blocker corporations.

Primary functions and essential responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting tax matters across the firm's public credit funds that are primarily taxed as regulated investment companies ('RICs'). The Tax Senior Associate will work closely with internal tax professionals, external accounting firms, fund accounting, and FP&A teams to facilitate accurate tax reporting, compliance, and regulatory filings. In a dynamic and rapidly growing environment, this role offers opportunities to contribute to a variety of tax initiatives and collaborate across multiple business and functional areas.

  • Work alongside outside accounting firms in the preparation and review of tax work papers for RIC Funds and respective corporate blockers.
  • Prepare quarterly RIC qualifications testing.
  • Support tax team with quantitative tax analysis for decision making.
  • Support US Public Credit tax and accounting teams with ensuring timely cross-communication of critical information between all parties.
  • Make quarterly tax payments on various federal and state websites.
  • Prepare accounts payable templates and coordinate payment process with business line tax teams and fund accounting.
  • Support tax team with resolution of federal and state tax notices.
  • Prepare income tax provisions and ASC 740 memos supporting financial statements.
  • Participate in internal deal team calls and facilitate tax analysis on new investments.
  • Manage annual and quarterly investor tax reporting packages.
  • Coordinate tax basis and E&P tracking with outside accounting firms.
  • Coordinate collection and distribution of directly held equity and CLO investment K-1s and PFIC schedules.
  • Maintain signification debt modification tracker and track book/tax differences.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. CPA license preferred. Experience

Required:

Minimum 6 years of corporation, partnership, and regulated company tax experience, preferably with combination of public accounting and in-house experience with an investment firm. Big 4 experience required. BDC experience is nice to have.

General Requirements:
Demonstrates strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word. Experience with or exposure to Alteryx and/or Power BI is preferred. Exhibits strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates strong analytical and critical thinking skills, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous learning.
