Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Vice President/Head of Tax to lead the income tax function for a large, complex global organization. This is a senior-level leadership position requiring a rare combination of deep technical tax expertise, strategic judgment, and a willingness to remain highly hands‑on in the day-to-day work.
The successful candidate will have previously owned an income tax function and be comfortable operating in a lean environment with one direct report and significant individual‑contributor responsibilities. This is not a role for someone who has become removed from execution.
The Head of Tax will have end‑to‑end responsibility for income tax accounting and reporting, domestic and international tax, transfer pricing, compliance, audits, planning, and management of external tax providers. The role will also partner closely with senior leadership and cross‑functional teams throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and own the company's global income tax function, including tax accounting, reporting, compliance, planning, and risk management.
- Own the quarterly and annual ASC 740 income tax provision, including preparation/review of supporting calculations, book‑to‑tax differences, deferred taxes, disclosures, and close activities.
- Oversee U.S. federal, state, local, and international income tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Lead and manage transfer pricing, including intercompany transactions, documentation, policies, and coordination with external advisors.
- Manage relationships with external tax providers, identifying opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the company's co‑sourced/outsourced tax model.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and tax advisors on income tax matters.
- Manage tax audits, examinations, inquiries, and other interactions with taxing authorities.
- Partner with Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, Legal, and other stakeholders on tax matters affecting the broader organization.
- Support tax planning initiatives involving M&A, legal entity structuring, intercompany transactions, and cash tax optimization.
- Monitor evolving domestic and international tax regulations, including developments related to Pillar II and global minimum taxation.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, documentation, and technology.
- Drive improvements to the tax close and provision process, including opportunities to shorten close timelines and increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Prepare and present tax matters to senior executives and, when required, the Audit Committee.
- Lead and develop a lean tax team while remaining directly involved in execution.
- CPA required.
- 15-20+ years of progressive tax experience across public accounting and corporate/industry environments.
- Prior experience leading or owning an income tax function at the Head of Tax, VP, or senior Director level.
- Significant experience within a large, complex organization, ideally $1B+ in revenue or comparable scale.
- Deep technical expertise in ASC 740, income tax provisions, deferred taxes, book/tax differences, and income tax disclosures.
- Strong domestic and international income tax experience.
- Significant transfer pricing expertise and experience supporting complex intercompany structures.
- Extensive experience overseeing tax compliance, tax audits, and external tax advisors.
- Demonstrated ability to personally prepare, review, and execute tax work rather than operating solely through delegation.
- Strong executive communication skills and experience presenting complex tax matters to senior leadership.
- Ability to work onsite in New York City four days per week.
- Big 4 experience strongly preferred, although not required.
- Combination of public accounting training and progressive corporate tax leadership experience.
- Experience building, transforming, or optimizing a corporate tax function.
