Position Overview
A growing, established general contractor and construction management firm is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its executive leadership team and oversee the financial strategy and operations of the organization.
The CFO will have overall responsibility for accounting, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow, banking relationships, risk management, and financial controls across the business. This individual will partner closely with ownership and senior leadership to provide financial insight, improve operational performance, and support the company's continued growth.
The ideal candidate will bring significant financial leadership experience within the construction, general contracting, or construction management industry and have a strong understanding of project-based accounting, WIP reporting, job costing, cash flow management, and bonding.
This is a hands-on leadership position requiring someone who can operate strategically at the executive level while maintaining a strong command of the company's day-to-day financial performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting and finance functions across the organization.
- Partner with ownership and executive leadership on financial strategy, growth planning, and major business decisions.
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and long-term financial modeling.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and ensure timely and accurate financial statements.
- Oversee WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, project profitability, and margin analysis
. - Work closely with project executives and operations leadership to monitor project financial performance, identify exposure, and improve forecasting accuracy.
- Establish and track financial KPIs across projects and the overall organization.
- Maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and financial processes appropriate for a growing construction organization.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, collections, and treasury functions.
- Manage working capital and cash flow requirements across a portfolio of active construction projects.
- Maintain relationships with banks, lenders, surety/bonding partners, insurance providers, auditors, and other external financial partners.
- Oversee annual audits, tax planning, compliance, and coordination with outside accounting and advisory firms.
- Evaluate financial systems, reporting tools, and processes and implement improvements that increase visibility, efficiency, and scalability.
- Support strategic initiatives including expansion, capital investments, acquisitions, and other growth opportunities.
- Develop, mentor, and lead the accounting and finance team.
- Provide ownership and executive leadership with clear, actionable financial reporting and insight into business performance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
- CPA and/or MBA preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience, including experience at the Controller, VP Finance, or CFO level.
- Significant experience within a general contractor, construction manager, specialty contractor, or closely related construction business strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion/revenue recognition, job costing, change orders, retainage, and project forecasting.
- Demonstrated experience managing cash flow and working capital within a project-based construction environment.
- Experience working with banks, sureties, bonding programs, insurance providers, auditors, and outside financial partners.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial controls, tax, audit, and compliance requirements.
- Experience building or improving financial reporting, processes, systems, and controls within a growing organization.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate financial information into practical business recommendations.
- Proven ability to partner effectively with ownership, executives, project management, and operational teams.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and balancing strategic leadership with hands-on financial oversight.
