Role Description

The Mortgage Underwriter is a full-time, on-site role based in the New York City Metropolitan Area. This role is responsible for reviewing and analyzing mortgage loan applications, credit reports, income documentation, assets, and collateral to determine creditworthiness and compliance with company and regulatory guidelines. The Mortgage Underwriter will evaluate risk, issue loan decisions, and communicate conditions to loan officers, processors, and other internal stakeholders.

Daily responsibilities include verifying documentation, underwriting Conventional, FHA and Non QM loans in accordance with and adherent to investor and agency requirements, along with maintaining accurate records in loan origination systems. The role also involves collaborating with sales and operations teams to resolve file issues promptly and supporting a smooth, efficient loan approval process.

Qualifications
  • Active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) Underwriter designation is preferred but not required.
  • Candidates should possess strong knowledge of the Mortgage Industry and familiarity with various mortgage products and programs.
  • Candidates should possess expertise in Mortgage Underwriting and general Underwriting practices, including risk assessment and credit analysis.
  • Candidates should possess hands-on experience working with Mortgages, including purchase, refinance, FHA, jumbo, and other specialized loan types.
  • Candidates should possess solid Analytical Skills, with the ability to interpret financial documents and make sound, data-driven decisions.
  • Additional beneficial qualifications include experience with agency and investor guidelines, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and FHA, proficiency with loan origination and underwriting systems, and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, and a commitment to fair lending and regulatory compliance.
  • Preferred:
    Prior experience as a mortgage underwriter in a retail or correspondent lending environment; additional relevant professional certifications or training.
