Position: Associate Investigator (Part-Time), Level I
Location: New York

Position Overview

The NYPD is seeking Part‑Time Associate Investigator, Level I. This position is limited to a maximum of 21 hours per week with an annual earning not to exceed $35,000.

Mission

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solving the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

Responsibilities
  • Conducting pre‑employment residency checks throughout the five boroughs as well as the resident counties.
  • Conducting recruit verifications on recruits who previously resided outside the resident counties prior to hire.
  • Conducting interviews and investigations of candidates applying for handgun licenses; processing various applications for carrying handguns; determining and ensuring applicant meets requirements for license requested; fingerprinting applicant using LIVESCAN system; researching various databases and contacting references to substantiate information submitted by applicant; and notifying applicant of approval or appeal process for denial of handgun permit.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory, full‑time experience as an investigator evaluating creditworthiness, searching for assets, verifying information concerning education, experience, and other personal qualifications bearing upon character and fitness for employment, or performing investigations involving the research, compilation and/or location of evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of a criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature;

    or
  • An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory, full‑time experience as described in “1” above; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory, full‑time experience as described in “1” above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong investigative skills and experience conducting investigations.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
