The office of public affairs oversees all agency communications including media relations, speech writing, and marketing campaigns, publications, photography and videography, digital and social media, and coordinating special events. In addition, the unit manages intergovernmental relations and legislative affairs.

In this role, the chief of staff will play a key role in supporting the deputy commissioner and providing guidance on the implementation of these critical communication and legislative initiatives. This individual will provide thorough and detailed analysis to the deputy commissioner of pending legislative proposals impacting the agency and work to ensure compliance with all applicable local laws and executive orders.

The chief of staff will also serve as a primary contact for various internal and external stakeholders, taking initiative to troubleshoot issues on behalf of the deputy commissioner and work to identify suitable solutions.

Reporting to the deputy commissioner, with latitude for independent judgment and initiative, the chief of staff will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

• serve as an advisor for the dc, providing guidance on communications and legislative strategies.

• serve as a key touchpoint for the unit with internal dcas stakeholders.

• serve as the dc's liaison to other city agencies and external partners with a particular focus on community boards and state legislature.

• contribute to the development and implementation of the agency’s legislative priorities.

• support the office of communications in the development of social media content.

• draft briefing documents and memos on key agency initiatives for the commissioner, city hall and other oversight entities.

• respond to written correspondence and other inquiries from external stakeholders.

• attend meetings with and on behalf of the dc as requested.

• support the dc with the implementation of special projects as directed.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and five years of full‑time paid experience acquired within the last fifteen years, of supervisory or administrative experience including handling of business promotion or urban economic problems, at least 2 years of which must have been in a managerial or executive capacity with primary focus on business promotion or urban economic planning;

or

2. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However all candidates must have 2 years of managerial or executive experience as described in "1" above.
