Organization Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Peace building Strategy and Partnership Branch (PSPB) of the Peace building Support Office (PBSO) in the Department of Political and Peace building Affairs (DPPA). The Political Affairs Officer reports to the Branch Chief in the PSPB through a Senior Political Affairs Officer who serves as the Team Leader for UN partnerships with International Financial Institutions. The focus of this post is to develop and maintain partnerships with International and Regional Financial Institutions to foster their involvement in peace building, through policy dialogue and country specific collaboration.
PBSO was established to assist and support the Peace building Commission (PBC) and administer the Peace building Fund (PBF). It provides assistance to the Peace building Commission and administers the Peace building Fund. The Department of Political and Peace building Affairs focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships.
Responsibilities- Develop and maintain partnerships with International and Regional Financial Institutions in support of UN peace building efforts, in consultation with all relevant stakeholders.
- Review and monitor peace building development and activities in assigned countries or regions, assess relevant trends that might affect political situations, and recommend possible actions by the United Nations.
- Analyze political and related events and trends within the assigned area to provide early warning advice to the Assistant Secretary‑General, the Under‑Secretary‑General or Head of Mission.
- Prepare analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high‑profile matters for the General Assembly, Security Council or other bodies; draft notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.
- Participate in the organization and supervision of Secretariat services required by the Security Council and related committees.
- Act as focal point for collection and analysis of information on political issues related to peace building strategy and partnerships.
- Arrange and participate in negotiations, peacekeeping operations and fact‑finding missions.
- Meet regularly with operational teams including UN staff, partner institution staff, national officials and military or civilian police officers to plan projects and review project activities.
- Provide up‑to‑date information to senior officials on substantive political peace building strategy matters and country or regional issues, and make recommendations on actions to take.
- Maintain contacts with other UN sectors, international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters; brief representatives and provide appropriate suggestions and recommendations.
- Participate in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to the assigned area of expertise.
- Provide input for assessment of staff to be deployed to important posts in the field (e.g., Resident Coordinators).
- Carry out administrative functions relating to staff planning and budgeting, in consultation with the Chief of the Section.
- Draft plans for the start‑up of operations and participate in implementation activities.
- Collect and analyze data to identify trends or patterns; provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data‑driven planning, decision‑making, presentation and reporting.
- Perform other related duties as required.
