POLITICAL AFFAIRS OFFICER (Temporary Job Opening)

- Gathers, selects and analyzes information from communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
- Maintains up‑to‑date knowledge of events relating to political issues, generally and in particular those affecting the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
- Monitors national and regional political developments and provides advice to the Chief of the Unit.
- Provides technical and substantive backup in the implementation of mandates of the Office and unit.
- Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other relevant international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
- Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non‑governmental organizations.
- Participates in the provision of secretariat services to the annual Conference elaborating a legally binding treaty establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, and to other relevant meetings or subsidiary body meetings.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provides insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data‑visualization methods to enable data‑driven planning, decision‑making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- PROFESSIONALISM – Ability to identify, analyze and understand political and security situations in the Middle East; ability to analyze and interpret data to support decision‑making and convey results to management; demonstrates professional competence, mastery, and commitment; incorporates gender perspectives and ensures equal participation.
- COMMUNICATION – Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens and interprets messages; tailors language, tone, style, and format to the audience; demonstrates openness and two‑way communication.
- CLIENT ORIENTATION – Considers all service recipients as clients; builds partnerships, identifies needs, matches solutions; monitors developments to anticipate problems; informs clients of progress; meets delivery timelines.
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or related fields. A first‑level university degree combined with qualifying experience may substitute the advanced degree. Completion of data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs is an advantage.
Work ExperienceMinimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or a related area. Experience in political report drafting is required; experience in project development, implementation and reporting is desirable. Two or more years in data analytics or a related area is desirable.
Languages- English – Fluency required (oral and written).
- Arabic – Fluency desirable.
- Other UN official language – desirable.
Evaluation may include an assessment exercise followed by a competency‑based interview.
