Position: Special Officer, OSYD - 26041
Location: New York

Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervising Safety Officer, the Special Officer performs duties to provide physical security, safety, loss prevention, and maintenance of order in accordance with policies and procedures throughout the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). The Special Officer is primarily assigned to provide security in NYCPS Administrative office buildings and works collaboratively with intergovernmental agencies and other divisions within the NYCPS.

Key Relationships

Works closely with staff within the Office of Safety and Youth Development (OSYD), various City and State agencies, including the New York City Police Department (NYPD) as well as families and students.

Responsibilities
  • Performs building patrol and creates reports regarding conditions and incidents that are observed.
  • Works various tours of duty as assigned to administrative buildings across the five boroughs, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Completes daily activity reports, including entry of daily actions into memo book.
  • Assists in implementing Administrative Building Safety Plan. Coordinates with Fire Safety Directors, Building Captains, and Building Response team members.
  • Uses computers and electronic security equipment to ensure that safe visitor entry procedures are followed, and reports equipment in need of maintenance or repair.
  • Transports, escorts, and/or arranges for transport of persons in custody to police precinct and records arrests on police blotter.
  • Responds to calls for assistance that may result in the need to investigate incidents and/or provide first aid or administer Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Coordinates with contracted security guards and reports issues arising from the work they perform.
  • Attends, completes, and maintains State and Agency training and certification requirements.
  • In the temporary absence of the supervisor, may perform the supervisor’s duties.
  • Maintains uniform and equipment in proper working order.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization.
  • All candidates must be qualified to serve as Peace Officers, satisfy state training requirements, obtain and maintain peace officer certification for the duration of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of NYCPS regulations and discipline code.
  • Prior work experience in security.
  • Attentive to detail.
  • Extremely well‑organized.
  • Able to work under pressure and meet frequent and changing deadlines.
License Requirements

A motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York is required for appointment to positions in certain agencies and must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Other Requirements

New York City Residency is NOT Required.

Salary

$39,206. Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.
