Location
Hybrid – 1 day per month in Home Office (required to live within a commutable distance of Sacramento or New York City).
Position SummaryWe are seeking a proactive team player for the Office of Governmental Affairs who will engage in policy education and advocacy activities with state legislatures and insurance regulators on behalf of New York Life. This position reports to the Vice President, Head of State Governmental Affairs.
What You’ll Do- Build and sustain relationships with governors’ offices, legislators, and regulators; lead direct advocacy with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, state insurance departments, and state legislatures.
- Provide strategic leadership on assigned issue areas and key states; analyze legislative, regulatory and public policy environment; proactively provide timely substantive and political analysis, updates and memos on related developments.
- Shape and advance NYL’s agenda by working closely with senior NYL executives and the governmental affairs team to formulate the company’s position and implement NYL’s legislative and regulatory strategy.
- Lead engagement with trade associations, peer companies, external lobbyists, and coalitions on complex policy issues to ensure NYL’s agenda is prioritized.
- Collaborate with other members of the governmental affairs team on priority issues and tasks.
- 5‑7 years of experience in a legislative, regulatory or governmental affairs environment; insurance industry and state government experience strongly preferred.
- Proven record of successful, strategic engagement with policymakers, including strong advocacy skills and ability to develop meaningful relationships with public policymakers.
- Knowledge of and experience with insurance‑related public policy issues.
- Ability to analyze and summarize legislative and regulatory proposals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including significant writing responsibilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface with senior NYL executives and public officials.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; a relevant advanced degree, including a law degree, is preferred.
- Willingness to travel to NAIC meetings, Washington, D.C., and key states when needed.
- Must live within a commutable distance of Sacramento or New York City.
Salary Range: $119,000–$170,000. Overtime eligible:

No. Actual base salary will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
