Job Title: MTAPD Assistant Chief of Police (Internal Only)
Salary: $218,230-$237,245
Dept/DIV: MTA Police Department (Various)
Supervisor: Chief of Operations
Location: Various (locations within the MTA service area)
Hours of Work: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
SummaryThe Department is seeking qualified employees who are interested in being considered for assignment to the rank of Assistant Chief.
Responsibilities- Supervise, direct, and oversee police operations within assigned area of responsibility, generally a Bureau or Office.
- Ensure staff is fully trained in laws and amendments applicable to their area.
- Allocate and review work of administrative staff (if applicable).
- Respond to major incidents and emergencies on a 24‑hour/7‑day basis.
- Schedule, prepare, and perform departmental training sessions as appropriate.
- Interpret regulations, ordinances, laws, and codes for staff.
- Evaluate and develop strategies to reduce crime and provide a sense of security to customers and employees.
- Develop close working relationships with associate law‑enforcement agencies and MTA agencies for coordinated response to critical incidents.
- Establish working relationships with community officials in their assigned area.
- Confirm subordinates understand and adhere to policies and philosophy of the Chief of Police.
- Follow MTA policies and procedures as relevant.
- Keep immediate supervisors aware of issues affecting the Department.
- Perform duties in support of the MTA Police Department’s vision, mission, and core values as outlined in the Department Manual.
- Select, develop, and motivate personnel; provide career development, coaching, counseling, discipline/termination when necessary; review performance; create a professional environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all policies and standards.
- May be required to work hours outside regular work hours as applicable.
- Observe work performed by contractors as applicable.
- Review invoices and approve them if work meets contractual standards.
- Address contractor performance issues when possible.
- Escalate issues to other parties when needed.
- Minimum 8 years of experience at the command level of a police operation OR experience at the executive level at a federal, state, or municipal government agency or authority.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience at the command level of the MTA Police Department by time of appointment.
- A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of principles of police administration, court rulings, and ability to apply to operations within their Bureau.
- Working knowledge of standard operating procedures of the MNR, LIRR, and Transit operations.
- Basic understanding of police computer systems; knowledge of NYS and CT Penal Law, Criminal Procedure, Family Court, Vehicle and Traffic Laws, Railroad Law, and local, county, town, and village ordinances where assigned.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational and presentation skills.
