The Team You’ll Work With:

NOTE: THIS ROLE IS LOCATED IN ALBANY, NY.

The Mayor's Office of State Legislative Affairs serves as the principal liaison between Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Administration and the New York State Legislature. State Legislative Affairs works toward the goal of fostering productive relationships between the executive and legislative branches and assists the Mayor's administration in developing and advancing the Administration’s agenda through State law and the State budget.

The Problems You’ll Solve:

The Chief of Staff will be assigned a portfolio and will be responsible for all related legislative and budget activity, hearings, and member requests. The Chief of Staff also acts as a liaison between the Mayor’s Office and State elected officials and agencies. The Chief of Staff also facilitates and approves meetings between the Mayor’s Office and State officials.

In addition to managing a portfolio, the Chief of Staff will perform the following additional duties:

  • Assists in the preparation of the Mayor's State Legislative Program.
  • Assists City agencies with State legislation.
  • Coordinate the Legislative Coordinating Committee process and the resulting recommendations.
  • Handle Special Projects as identified by the Director.
  • Coordinate policy briefings, delegation meetings, or special events.
  • Represent Director at meetings with administration officials, legislative staff, boards, etc.
About You:

You have demonstrated understanding of and experience with any combination of the following: the State legislative process, public policy analysis, New York City or State agency operations and lobbying.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree. Graduate degree (MPA/MS) preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience.
Preferred Skills
  • You have excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills along with a strong work-ethic and the ability to work independently.
  • You have an outstanding attention to detail and strong ability to prioritize and manage a wide array of projects to completion, often under tight deadlines.
  • You have strong interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of the interview.
