Location: New York

Not mandatory remote work up to 2 days per week under the Flexible Work Pilot Program.

The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) protects and enhances the daily economic lives of New Yorkers. DCWP licenses nearly 45,000 businesses across more than 40 industries and enforces key consumer protection and workplace laws.

External Affairs (EA)

EA manages DCWP’s relationships with the press, digital media, public-facing media, city hall, elected officials, government agencies, and community & faith-based organizations. EA ensures that the agency speaks with a single and consistent voice across DCWP’s jurisdiction.

Key Efforts
  • Promote DCWP in the press.
  • Engage the public through digital communications.
  • Produce DCWP’s public-facing media, including integrated public awareness campaigns.
  • Coordinate legislative policy.
  • Conduct community outreach.
  • Respond to constituent inquiries or complaints.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain external relationships with elected officials, government agencies, industry and community stakeholders, and members of the public.
  • Conduct frequent in-person and virtual outreach to underserved communities.
  • Accurately and concisely represent the work and policies of the agency in an engaging manner.
  • Coordinate event logistics, locations, materials, staffing, and trainings.
  • Effectively link with other departmental divisions to ensure project success.
  • Provide administrative support and assistance in special or ad‑hoc projects as needed.
Community Coordinator (56058)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the first two options, with a minimum of one year of experience as described in the first option.
Preferred Skills
  • Proven leadership skills with strategic thinking and experience developing and supporting high-performing diverse work teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, ability and aptitude to quickly learn new computer programs and technology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to capture and analyze data.
  • Ability to read and understand laws and rules.
  • Experience handling multiple assignments with competing deadlines, maintaining detail and accuracy.
  • Multilingual capacity highly preferred.
  • Driver’s license a plus.
  • Flexibility in hours.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. Consult the agency representative during the interview to determine if the residency requirement applies to you.
