Job Summary

The Lead MRI Technologist is an experienced professional who leads and coordinates the operational and administrative functions of MRI services. In this role, the incumbent will lead a collaborative team of technologists by directing staff activities and overseeing quality assurance and control activities. The incumbent will perform all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation, and archiving MRI images, and will be responsible for the care of the patient while in the MRI area.

Job Summary
  • Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff.
  • Perform MRI and general radiological procedures:
    • Review imaging requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Review all questionable orders with the radiologist and, at the radiologist’s discretion, the referring physician.
    • Position patient and select appropriate options to ensure best-case.
    • Observe patient while in the MRI area for change in status and make appropriate intervention or contact primary care givers for instruction.
    • Judge diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to radiologist for interpretation.
    • Offer detailed explanation of diagnostic procedures to patients and answer questions as appropriate.
    • Administer contrast media via appropriate peripheral IV access as directed.
  • Operate and maintain equipment on a daily basis, maintaining logbooks with equipment performance data: schedule PM, perform QA, maintain records required for and participate in inspections.
  • Perform clerical responsibilities associated with acquisition, processing, and archiving of patient records.
  • Review staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage on a daily basis.
  • Assign or coordinate MRI technologist coverage/schedule to ensure that coverage is maintained, especially during heavy demand.
  • Support Practice Manager on recruitment, onboarding, performance appraisals, and disciplinary activities for MRI technologists.
  • Manage day-to-day QC activities; delegate process as appropriate for the assigned and/or satellite sites.
  • Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as assigned by the Practice Manager.
  • Manage or lead annual inspections, ensuing QC and regulatory manuals are current.
  • Prepare and submit ACR accreditation materials for MRI.
  • Work with vendors, facilities, IT and physics to evaluate new equipment, installation and staff training to ensure equipment is ready for patient care.
Job Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalency.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience, including 2-year minimum in a senior or lead technologist role; exposure to a wide range of MRI studies required.
  • NYS License, ARRT certified. MRI Registry certified.
  • New York BLS certified.
  • Demonstrated leadership proficiency in a team environment, including communication, training/knowledge-sharing, coordination, delegation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership in continuous improvement or quality initiatives.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a strong ability to deescalate stressful situations. Demonstrated ability to teach these skills to other technologists.
  • Candidate must demonstrate strong aptitude for detail, flexibility, punctuality, and ability to work independently.
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Must be able to make sound judgments and execute the appropriate actions based on the needs of patients and knowledge of facility policies and procedures.
