Job Summary:
The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University seeks a full‑time Surgical Technologist 2 to work in Labor & Delivery. The role involves preparing instruments, assisting the surgical team during procedures, maintaining a sterile environment, and performing pre‑operative and postoperative tasks.
- Assist the Registered Nurse and surgeon in identifying, gathering, and preparing medical instrumentation and specialty equipment for surgical procedures.
- Assist the surgical team with setup and passing of sterile instruments during surgical procedures.
- Ensure proper handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, implants, surgical supplies, and specimens in a manner that ensures asepsis and patient safety.
- Prepare the sterile field and assist in preparing the operative site and draping the patient.
- Transport patients to and from the operating room and perform pre‑operative shave preps.
- Assist in preparation and aftercare of equipment and supplies.
- Clean and assemble instruments in a container or tray, wrap and label instruments appropriately.
- Test the operation and efficiency of equipment and report problems to the Registered Nurse.
- Collect and transport required operative setup to the surgical room.
- Assist in cleaning and restocking rooms according to established standards.
- Assist in taking inventory of equipment and supplies for specialty areas.
- Coordinate and delegate assignments to subordinate staff and provide advanced training to newer Surgical Technologists.
- Instruct Surgical Technologists in steps of surgical procedures and use of instruments.
- Identify and report patient care needs to the Registered Nurse.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs.
- Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist education program and current surgical technologist certification by a nationally accredited credentialing organization and at least 1 year of permanent service as a Teaching Hospital Surgical Technologist 1 or 1 year experience in an acute‑care setting.
- Or completion of an appropriate training program in surgical technology in the U.S. Armed Forces or the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and one year experience in an acute‑care setting.
- Or possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State and 1 year experience as a surgical technologist in an acute‑care setting.
- Applicants without current surgical technologist certification may be considered if they have 1 year of surgical technologist experience in an acute‑care setting between January 1, 2011, and January 1, 2015.
- Individuals certified eligible for the 55 B/C program under the Governor’s Program to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities (Section 55 B/C of the Civil Service Law). Provide a copy of your eligibility letter.
Variable days, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (Full‑Time)
SalaryBase Salary range: $50,425 to $61,548 plus $4,000 Location Pay and $13,000 Geographic Differential.
