Typical Work Activities
- Instruction including but not limited to:
- Anatomy and Physiology:
In-depth study of the circulatory system, vein selection, and body systems. - Blood Collection Techniques:
Proper methods for venipuncture (vein) and capillary (finger/heel stick) collection. - Safety and Infection Control:
Implementation of universal precautions and proper disposal of biohazardous waste and sharps. - Specimen Handling and Processing:
Correct labeling, transportation, storage, and the proper "order of draw" for additives. - Patient Care and Communication:
Identifying patients correctly, easing patient anxiety, and maintaining confidentiality. - Medical Terminology and Documentation:
Understanding clinical terms, lab tests, and managing test requisitions. - Professionalism and Legal Aspects:
Ethics, legalities of consent, and patient rights. - Hands-on Training:
Practice with simulators or performing a required number of successful draws.
- Anatomy and Physiology:
- Curriculum is provided, but the instructor is responsible for recommendations for updates to the curriculum, incl. quizzes, tests and other materials.
- Assisting students with externship arrangements.
- Student advisement.
- Grading.
- Staff meetings as required.
- Other duties as assigned relating to the Phlebotomy program.
Possess a high school diploma or GED, 5 years of experience working as a phlebotomist. Experience as a trainer preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Characteristics- Clinical Skill – Demonstrates safe, accurate venipuncture and specimen-handling techniques and can model them confidently for learners.
- Strong Communication & Teaching Ability – Explains procedures clearly, breaks down steps, and provides feedback adult learners can act on.
- Patience & Empathy – Supports nervous or inexperienced students with understanding, encouragement, and professionalism.
- Commitment to Student Success – Motivates learners, adapts instruction to different learning styles, and ensures all students have opportunities to succeed.
