Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Emergency Medical Dispatcher - Per Diem.
In this role, the successful candidate the Emergency Med Svcs. Dispatcher receives triage and dispatch requests for Emergency Medical Services and ensures appropriate and timely responses by emergency personnel. The Emergency Med Svcs. Dispatcher is responsible for the Operations Center and the coordination of EMS staff deployment, vehicle assignments and all operational details key to the safe, efficient and effective operations of the service throughout the shift.
Job Responsibilities- Demonstrates communications skills and exercises considerable judgment under pressure. Operates EMS Computer-Aided Dispatching (CAD) equipment to quickly and accurately receive and transmit information of an emergency nature to NYULH EMS
- Responsible for proper operations of the Emergency Operations Center. Oversees all radio communications including but not limited to FDNY, NYULH, OEM and REMSCO. Monitors Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL), GPS and Closed-Circuit Cameras
- Operates radios, telecommunications equipment, computer terminals, management systems including Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) Software.
- Receives all incoming calls including requests for service and processes as appropriate. Triages all ambulance assignments and provides online instructions for first aid as necessary until the appropriate unit arrives at the patient’s location
- Conduct all radio transmissions according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and the departments established procedures.
- Obtains all necessary information from telephone callers to determine the incident location utilizing maps and any available tools and relays that information to responding personnel to maximize the accuracy and speed of dispatch.
- Continually monitors the activity of the unit throughout assignment. Receives progress and updates all incoming assignment information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System and appropriate logs. Ensures staff compliance with the completion of documentation as required.
- Maintains Communication Center Equipment, ensures that it is functioning properly and notifies the appropriate supervisor/management staff when a problem arises. When equipment failures occur, coordinates and follows proper policy and procedures to ensure uninterrupted service.
- Coordinates the response/actions of staff members and ensures the efficiency and availability of all EMS Units. Takes appropriate action when immediate intervention is necessary and refers to the appropriate supervisor those efficiencies or problems that can be resolved at a later time. Documents all department specific incidents to the appropriate supervisor for corrective action and follow up
- Maintains situational awareness of local, regional, state and national emergencies, weather events, mutual aid status, significant incidents, planned events, etc.
- In cases of actual MCIs or disasters, the Dispatcher is responsible for following the appropriate notification policy as per the department MCI Plans. Remains abreast of all interagency activities that can affect the potential outcome of internal and external disasters. Coordinates the response of these agencies as requested by the EMS Director or designee.
- Interacts with Patient Services, Affiliations, Private Physicians and the staff at referring medical facilities or hospitals to effectively coordinate the safe and efficient transport, transfer of unstable or critically ill patients. When necessary, the Dispatcher acts as a resource person to expedite emergency calls, transport and inter-facility transfers enlisting the assistance of the EMS Management and Administrative Team. Utilizes judgement to avoid misunderstanding where improper handling could affect results and patient care.

High School Diploma or GED - Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification Required within 3 months of hire date
- CPR Certification Required
