About the Role

The Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute at the Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a highly motivated translational scientist or biomedical engineer to join our experimental organ perfusion laboratory and to provide scientific and operational support to a growing clinical machine perfusion program. This role sits at the interface of biology, engineering, and clinical translation, with opportunities to develop and advance an independent research portfolio while gaining structured exposure to real‑world clinical perfusion workflows.

The position is well suited to candidates with 1–2 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience who are looking to build independence in a supportive, high‑impact academic environment. Candidates with a PhD at any career stage will be considered. The successful applicant will work closely with the Principal Investigator and clinical leadership, overseeing day‑to‑day laboratory activities, contributing to trainee mentorship, and supporting selected administrative and technical functions that ensure seamless integration between experimental and clinical perfusion programs.

Key Responsibilities
Experimental Research, Scientific Development & Laboratory Operations
  • Design, conduct, and analyze independent and collaborative research projects in ex vivo organ perfusion, transplantation science, and perfusion‑related technologies.
  • Contribute to experimental design, protocol optimization, and quantitative data analysis, including biological, physiological, and device‑generated data.
  • Support development and refinement of perfusion systems, sensors, sampling workflows, and data capture pipelines.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day laboratory activities and shared resources.
  • Participate in manuscript preparation and data interpretation.
  • Assist with regulatory documentation (e.g., IRB submissions and renewals).
  • Mentor students and trainees.
  • Develop an independent research portfolio and contribute to grant writing.
Support of the Clinical Machine Perfusion Program
  • Provide scientific, technical, and analytical support to the clinical machine perfusion team.
  • Assist with translation of experimental protocols into clinical workflows.
  • Support training activities.
  • Maintain protocols, biospecimen workflows, and equipment organization.
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • PhD in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical sciences, physiology, or a closely related field.
  • 1–2 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience preferred.
  • Experience in organ perfusion, transplantation, biomedical devices, physiological systems, or translational research.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • Clinical machine perfusion or medical device experience is a plus.
