This opportunity is for a Patient Care Technician/Senior Nursing Attendant at Perlmutter Cancer Center on the Evening Shift (37.5 Hours).
Position SummaryIn this role, the successful candidate assists the professional nurse in the care of patients and families by completing assigned patient care tasks; provides competent, safe, and compassionate care with emphasis on understanding the challenges faced by hospitalization, procedures, or diagnostic tests; supports unit needs related to the maintenance and safety of supplies, equipment, and the environment; and demonstrates NYU Langone Health Core Values in all aspects of performance.
Job Responsibilities- Demonstrates knowledge of the NYU Langone Health Core Values and incorporates them into duties.
- Demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality, privacy, dignity, and rights.
- Maintains accountability for supplies, equipment, and environmental support.
- Assists in data collection for unit Quality and Performance Improvement programs, including patient satisfaction and other measures.
- Assists the nurse in reviewing and implementing corrective action plans related to patient/family response and satisfaction.
- Recognizes own limitations and requests assistance when needed.
- Discusses educational concerns and goals with the Nurse Manager or appropriate leadership; seeks learning resources for identified needs.
- Participates in orientation for other patient care technicians and in unit meetings and conferences.
- Completes annual mandatory education requirements for patient care technicians.
- Demonstrates awareness of the needs and behaviors of specific patient age groups and cultures.
- Supports unit activities as requested and assists in emergency situations as directed.
- Utilizes specialized skills and safety practices when carrying out tasks such as phlebotomy, finger sticks for glucose, and electrocardiograms.
- Demonstrates understanding of infection prevention and control standards.
- Assists in data collection and maintains safety and comfort needs of patients and families; assists with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures per unit/department operations.
- Communicates responsively and supportively with patients, families, and staff; observes general behavior and reports to the registered nurse when assigned.
- Performs safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints, per policy and direction.
- Provides direct assistance to patients in activities of daily living as applicable; completes delegated responsibilities as directed by the registered nurse.
- Maintains clear, respectful communication with patients, families, nurses, and other health care team members; functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
- Provides prompt responses to patient calls and assists with personal care requests; reports requests outside the scope of the patient care technician to the professional nurse.
- Ensures security of patients' personal property and maintains unit cleanliness and orderliness; ensures necessary equipment and supplies are present in patient rooms and on the unit.
Patient Care Technician:
High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate of a PCT program with at least 6 months hospital experience OR CNA graduate with course completion in EKG & Phlebotomy and PCT certification eligible with at least 6 months hospital experience; or PCT certification through the National Health career Association (NHA) with at least 6 months hospital experience. BLS/CPR/AED certification. Must complete PCT online program within 3 months of hire.
Senior Nursing Attendant:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of a Certified Nursing Attendant program, certified as a CNA, with at least 6 months relevant experience. BLS/CPR/AED certification required upon entry.
Competencies:
strong English communication skills; customer service orientation.
Required Licenses: Basic Life Support
