Research Assistant Professor FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CSOM graduated in its first MD class in 2020. In addition, CSOM offers a two-year Physician Assistant (PA) program to prepare health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision.

The mission of the CSOM is
1) to provide access to medical and PA education to talented youth from social, ethnic, and racial backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under‑served communities with a special emphasis on primary care and
2) to perform innovative research in health professions education, community health and biomedicine.

The successful candidate will serve as an Assistant Professor within the CUNY School of Medicine, contributing to interdisciplinary research and education across basic science, clinical, and community health departments, as well as the NIH‑funded translational research center. The role emphasizes building an independent, externally funded research program that leverages AI, genomics, and advanced analytics to improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities, particularly in underserved communities.

Core duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Conduct innovative research applying AI, genomics, and statistical methods to large‑scale medical datasets (EHR, imaging, genomics, clinical trials).
  • Design algorithms and predictive models to advance diagnostics, medical devices, healthcare access, and translational discoveries.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty, biomedical researchers, and clinicians.
  • Contribute to research initiatives supported by the National Institutes of Health U54 grant.
  • Publish in peer‑reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences.
  • Teach and develop curriculum in AI, bioinformatics, and biomedical data science.
  • Mentor students, trainees, and junior investigators.
  • Lead and participate in grant writing and research proposal development.
  • Support institutional service and initiatives aimed at improving health equity and patient outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in area(s) of expertise or equivalent. Also required are success in carrying out research and ability to advise and/or oversee the direct work of others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms
  • Demonstrated application of AI/ML or advanced analytics to medical imaging, genomics, EHR, or related clinical/preclinical datasets
  • Familiarity with healthcare data formats and standards (e.g., DICOM, HL7, or other clinical data protocols)
  • Publications in AI/ML and/or healthcare‑focused journals and conferences
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary academic or medical research environment
  • Demonstrated skills in experimental design
  • Experience in grant writing and manuscript preparation
COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $63,764 - $85,000

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
