Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The hospital is comprised of 545 beds and is a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station and a 911 Receiving Hospital. Responsibilities

Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, PsyD, EdD) in Psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited program, accepted by the NYSED.

Valid limited permit to practice as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment to title.

Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:

Under the supervision of an assigned fully licensed Physician, provides a wide-range of comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care and medical services in a health care setting. Ensures patient and family-centered quality care to improve outcomes and patient experience, in accordance with applicable NYC Health + Hospitals policies and procedures, state and federal rules and regulations and medical standards of care.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

Obtains a detailed and accurate history and performs an appropriate physical examination on patients in a health care setting.

Develops an assessment and a therapeutic plan and provides ongoing patient care based on this plan in a health care setting, as per protocol.

Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs), diagnostic procedures and writes prescriptions according to protocols established by the service.

Performs specific procedures, including but not limited to: drawing blood specimens for testing; blood counts; urinalysis; pap smears; bacteriologic smears; gram stain of sputum and other culturable material(s); vital capacity; administering oxygen; incisions and drainage; wound care and debridement; nasogastric and nasotracheal intubation; gastric analysis; lumbar punctures; routine suturing of lacerations; skin biopsies; placing indwelling arterial catheters and making blood gas determinations;

applying and removing casts and traction apparatus; starting I.V. solutions, administering I.V. medications and other therapeutic procedures for which he or she has received specific supervised training and evaluation.

Initiates consultations and refers patient for special testing according to health care setting’s protocols.

Participates in daily rounds to observe and record pertinent progress of patients, updating and summarizing charts, writing orders and progress notes and notifying the Physician of changes in the patient’s condition, when appropriate.

Participates in team conferences, lectures and grand rounds for the service.

Instructs and counsels the patient and their family about preventative care, medical problems, prescribed treatments and medications, normal growth and development, family planning, situational adjustment reactions and other related matters.

Assists the Supervising Physician and assists Physician on any other procedures falling within the scope of practice of that Physician.

Performs Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) procedures in the presence of life‑threatening situations, such as cardiac and/or respiratory distress, when a Physician is unavailable and with Physician, when appropriate.

Performs other related duties, as directed.
