Position: Histology Aide (Day)
Location: New York

Job Purpose/Overview

The Histology Laboratory Aide is responsible for the collection, identification, verification, processing, and preparation of histology samples.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Diligently check and communicate with pathologists and lab coordinators regarding any questions and concerns, monitor the orphaned slide file daily, reconcile exception lists, and locate missing slides for scanning.
  • Scan all slides into scanners and provide edits per protocol.
  • Run and maintain staining and cover‑slipping instruments.
  • Accurately scan all slides and blocks returned from pathologists at benchmark; clinical and anatomic.
  • Process add‑on requests in a timely manner, including all Antrim changes to the original accession number.
  • Process biopsy submissions under a fume hood.
  • Organize test request forms (TRF) with samples on grossing trays.
  • Sort urgent and manifest samples.
  • Dry leaked TRFs per SOP and perform container transfers.
  • Receive biopsy samples from other labs and organize them as outlined.
  • Scan TRFs using the scanner; monitor output to ensure no errors in transcribing data.
  • Pull and reconcile assigned pending lists.
  • Maintain awareness of quality control and calibration procedures.
  • Cross‑train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within the department/lab.
  • Follow applicable SOPs, including safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Restock supplies as needed.
  • Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
  • Consult with senior peers on non‑complex tasks to learn through experience.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent, and/or 2‑ or 4‑year degree in a science‑related field preferred. Prior laboratory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and operating lab instruments.
  • General science background with knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and histology procedures and equipment.
  • Attention to detail and organization with the ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to exchange accurate information.
  • Proficiency in English, including participation in team meetings, accurate data entry, and comprehension of written directions.
  • Positive, can‑do attitude.
  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.
Working Conditions

Stationary position: must remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours; periodically operate a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently. Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch and may lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs. Observation of details at close range is necessary. Extended hours may be required. The laboratory environment may present biohazards and requires mandatory use of PPE.

The role involves close to moderate supervision and potential exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and to hazardous chemicals as defined by national hazardous communication standards.
