Division/Program Summary

The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school aged children enrolled in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools in New York City. This is achieved through a combination of public health initiatives, case management, education, and direct clinical services.

Asthma Case Management Program (ACMP) is a comprehensive school-based initiative embedded in the OSH Medical Unit that provides individualized care coordination, education, and follow-up for students with uncontrolled asthma. The program partners with families, school staff, and community healthcare providers to reduce asthma-related emergencies, improve daily symptom control, and support student attendance and academic success.

Position Summary

Reporting to the team lead, supports the work of the asthma case manager within the schools. The Program Evaluation Specialist will be expected to provide health education, support and referrals for families of students with asthma. Communicate to OSH and community providers on asthma management and social services needs of students and families.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides technical assistance and support to the team.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the asthma case management program, presentations, and materials by utilizing entry and exit interviews and surveys, and other appropriate methods.
  • Surveys the public, target populations, agency staff, and service providers to identify public health needs, problems, and available resources.
  • Represents the agency at meetings with public health service providers and with other groups.
  • Explains program/agency policies, objectives, and procedures to school officials.
  • Provides technical assistance in the preparation of educational materials.
  • Acts as liaison with other agencies within the school’s community.
  • Works on special projects for the Office of School Health.
  • Analyzes the training needs of programs.
  • Provides public health education services and serves as liaison within the agency, with other City agencies, and to community groups.
  • Staff must work in the Bronx.

PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATOR - 51110

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of full‑time satisfactory experience in: (a) developing public health education programs, including identifying target populations, conducting needs assessments, designing educational materials, planning educational presentations or workshops, and evaluating health education programs; (b) presenting public health education programs; and/or (c) counseling in areas such as communicable diseases, substance abuse, assault, sexual abuse, and/or family planning;

    or
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas: public health education, education, public/community health administration, public administration or business administration and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above.
