Summary/PrimaryRole
The Histology Supervisor manages all histology and anatomic pathology laboratory operations, including staff supervision, workflow coordination, quality assurance, and LIS system administration. Under the guidance of the Lab Director, this role carries full operational accountability for the AP department, ensuring prompt, accurate testing and reporting of results within established time frames. The Histology Supervisor functions within the scope of practice regulated by state and national governments as well as various accrediting agencies.

- Supervise histology staff including scheduling, performance evaluations, timecards, training, and annual competency assessments.
- Work as a bench technologist approximately 50% of the time performing grossing, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and cover slipping.
- Manage specimen accessioning, case tracking, and turnaround time monitoring to ensure timely pathologist sign-out.
- Coordinate daily workflow with the pathologists for case sign-out, report finalization, and quality review.
- Administer the Orchard Enterprise Pathology (OEP) module for AP accessioning, resulting, and reporting.
- Define and maintain AP report templates and ensure cancer registry reporting to the NYS Department of Health via ECLRS is current and compliant.
- Manage reference lab send-out workflow and compendium for Dianon, Quest, and Lab Corp interfaces.
- Coordinate with IT on Orchard-to-Athena EMR interface for AP orders and results.
- Lead validation studies for new tests, stains, and instrumentation in conjunction with the Lab Director and pathologists, including IHC implementation as services expand.
- Maintain all AP procedure manuals, SOPs, and validation documentation per CLIA and NYS CLEP requirements.
- Manage equipment maintenance schedules and vendor service contracts for AP instrumentation.
- Prepare agenda and reports for quarterly pathology quality meetings and prepare minutes.
- Facilitate proficiency testing, competency assessments, and continuing education tracking for AP staff.
- Coordinate with Clinisys (Orchard vendor) on configuration changes and support tickets as needed.
- Perform annual CLEP permit renewal including compiling GAR (Gross Annual Receipts) totals.
- Maintain active HCS (Health Commerce System) coordinator access for ECLRS reporting and eCLEP duties.
- Facilitate testing for xylene and formalin exposure for pathology employees upon hire and annually.
- Perform specimen audits for each section of the laboratory and annual review of audit results.
- Other duties as assigned.
- HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification required.
- Current NYS Histotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in histology or anatomic pathology.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a NYS-certified laboratory strongly preferred.
- Experience with routine and advanced histologic techniques, laboratory workflows, and regulatory standards.
- Experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
- Preferred:
Experience with an anatomic pathology LIS (Orchard Enterprise, Nova Path, Sunquest AP, Beaker AP, or comparable). - Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in a biological science or related field.
This position has direct supervisory responsibility for all histology and anatomic pathology laboratory staff, including scheduling, performance evaluations, timecards, training, and annual competency assessments. To effectively support staff and ensure operational continuity, the incumbent is expected to work on-site and be available during regular laboratory operating hours.
Expected Hours of WorkAn employee must work a minimum of thirty (30) hours each week to maintain full-time status for benefits purposes; however, the expectations of the position will require an average of forty (40) hours with overtime required as scheduled. Exempt employees may be required to work additional hours as necessary to fulfill their job responsibilities. Overtime requirements will be determined based on the operational needs of the organization.
