Phlebotomist II
The Phlebotomist II performs high-quality blood and specimen collection, processing, and documentation in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. This role combines hands-on phlebotomy with specimen handling, data entry, and customer service, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant laboratory operations. The Phlebotomist II also supports workflow by troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending process improvements.
Responsibilities- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy before collection and processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens properly for transport, following all procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow different procedures and protocols as required for transport to ensure specimen stability and compliance.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and related documentation in the appropriate systems.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
- Attend and participate in annual department trainings and ongoing education as required.
- Assist with troubleshooting workflow or specimen-related issues and escalate concerns as needed.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques when requested.
- Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and overall laboratory processes.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2–4 years of overall related experience.
- Proven proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws, including use of straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Demonstrated experience in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens according to test orders.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify information.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in checking test requisitions and computer labels against scripts or orders.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to patient and caller inquiries.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in both laboratory and hospital settings.
- Comfort with handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Ability to read and understand physicians' orders and translate them into appropriate collection actions.
- Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a clinical or laboratory setting.
- Customer service skills, including courteous and clear communication with patients and healthcare staff.
