Overview
Under guidance of the Medical and Administrative Director(s), manages and directs on-going activities of the Blood Bank. Ensures quality assurance standards are maintained as per cGMP. Provides training of staff, students and residents. Supervises and performs testing and disposition of blood, blood components and derivatives. Prepares and reviews reports. Assists the Administrative and Medical Director with personnel functions. Utilizes Blood Bank computer system.
Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, JCAHO / various regulatory agency requirements. Demonstrates and promotes service excellence at all times.

- Manages work flow and work assignments to ensure the prompt and accurate provision of information, specimen processing and preparation and release of components.
- Ensures technical work and activities are in total compliance with operating policies and technical procedures.
- Reviews technical work and activities performed by technical staff.
- Documents and reviews all technical work performed.
- Takes corrective action when activities are not performed properly.
- Reviews all quality assurance testing.
- Takes corrective action where required.
- Documents timely review of general and individual quality control testing.
- Documents corrective actions where appropriate.
- Trains staff in new methodologies, equipment and new or revised operating policies.
- Re-trains staff where appropriate and when necessary.
- Ensures staff attendance at staff training sessions.
- Documents training of staff, residents and students.
- Ensures all technical competencies are completed in a timely manner (annually).
- Performs more complex testing inclusive of multiple antibody identification, problem cross-matching and neutralization studies.
- Willingly assists technical staff in the performance of problem cross-matching or antibody identification.
- Maintains surveillance of timely processing of specimens and blood release.
- Sets priority for processing order of patient specimens as well as component preparation for release to patients.
- Interprets test data as required.
- Ensures timely review of interpretation of routine and problem processing, panel studies and all special studies.
- Documents interpretation of routine and problem processing, panel studies and all special studies.
- Maintains inventory control of all blood components and products.
- Ensures availability of blood components for timely transfusions in emergency and routine patent situations.
- Pays strict attention to expiration of current inventory.
- Ensures timely review of exception report.
- Ensures timely review of inventory expiration report.
- Ensures timely review of outstanding request report.
- Ensures timely processing of Bi-weekly time sheets.
- Ensures timely processing and availability of Pre-Op cross-match requests Ensure timely response to Operating Room release requests. Performs daily review of bloods issued to and returned from Operating Room refrigerator.
- Ensure timely documentation of review and corrective actions.
- Ensures timely submission of required monthly statistic reports.
- Ensures adequate coverage of technical and clerical staff with cost-efficient distribution of overtime and extension staff hours.
- Performs timely competency assessment / performance appraisals according to institutional schedules and policies
- Ensures availability of materials, reagents and supplies for Blood Bank daily operations.
- Maintains records of current inventory and usage of all supplies to ensure cost effectiveness.
- Ensures availability for on-call situations.
- Willing participates in all on-call situations.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the Blood Bank computer system.
