Job Description

This role is for an experienced phlebotomist who performs high-volume blood collection and specimen processing in a fast-paced outpatient setting. The phlebotomist uses strong straight-needle venipuncture skills to collect, label, process, and prepare specimens for transport while maintaining accurate records and providing clear, courteous communication to patients and colleagues.

Responsibilities

+ Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure.

+ Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (such as urine or fecal collection) to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.

+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.

+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all patient and test information for accuracy.

+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order.

+ Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.

+ Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain proper conditions and chain of custody.

+ Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection container or tube.

+ Follow different procedures and protocols as necessary for specimen transport to preserve sample integrity.

+ Record maintenance data and decontamination activities in accordance with lab standards and regulatory requirements.

+ Update patient information accurately in the system, including data entry related to specimen collection and processing.

+ Use knowledge of different color tubes and associated tests to ensure proper collection and handling.

+ Communicate clearly with patients, colleagues, and other staff members, demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.

Essential Skills

+ Minimum 2 years of recent phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

+ Strong experience and confidence using straight needles for blood draws.

+

Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood drawing techniques, including the use of butterfly needles.

+

Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.

+ Ability to collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols.

+ Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders.

+ Accurate data entry skills for updating patient information and maintaining records.

+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

+ Reliable, punctual, and able to consistently follow schedules and workflows.

+ Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Familiarity with different color collection tubes and the tests associated with each.

+ Experience working in an outpatient or patient service center environment.

+ Bilingual ability, particularly in Spanish, is preferred but not required.

+ Comfort working in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical setting.

+ Ability to maintain professionalism and patient focus during all interactions.

Work Environment

This position is based in a patient service center located in Jackson Heights, Queens, serving an outpatient population in a fast-paced clinical environment. The role involves frequent interaction with patients and staff, regular use of phlebotomy equipment, centrifuges, and computer systems, including Microsoft Office applications for documentation and data entry. The schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with rotating Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The environment requires adherence to standard clinical safety, hygiene, and infection-control practices, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
