As Nassau County - Public Health Specialist II (Early Intervention and WIC Programs), you are responsible for working with the Nassau County Health Department to provide specialized professional services related to public health and designated focus areas. This position will support Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) activities in Nassau County, NY.

Position Specific Responsibilities

The Public Health Specialist II’s assigned to the Office of Children with Special Needs Early Intervention (EI) program or the Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) program will assist in program implementation by providing support to the professional staff as directed. These programs serve thousands of our young families who are experiencing financial and nutritional risk and/or developmental delays in children under three years old.

The skills required for these positions include the ability to address access, communications, provide program support and participate in quality assurance activities. These positions are intended to execute direct tasks independently as well as coordinate the tasks with other team members. The Specialist will also be familiar with how to access other Department and community MCH resources and various social service and mental health supports.

This position is located on site at the Nassau County Health Department.

The role of the Public Health Specialist II (Early Intervention and WIC Programs) may include:
  • Program Support – 60%
    • Assist in the daily operations of a public health program providing therapeutic and nutritional services to families
    • Providing support for information and referral requests, maintaining child records, processing service documents, completing entries in the electronic systems, preparing required documentation for families, receipt, processing, and evaluation of completion of required documentation for newly referred families
  • Quality Assurance/Data Support – 20%
    • Monitor data entry and review/support systems essential to the local health department programs
    • Develop data analysis capabilities
    • Participate in QA reporting processes as required by program guidelines and prepare reports as directed
    • Participate in the program’s ongoing QA/QI Committees and provide input as new IT support systems are developed
  • Communications Support – 20%
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, and a solid understanding of public health delivery systems
    • Provide clear and accurate program information and referral, both verbal and written to the public
    • Participate in community outreach events
    • Develop/edit informational content as indicated
Qualifications

This position is intended to execute complex tasks independently as well as coordinate the tasks of other team members.

Minimum Qualifications for This Position
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required.
  • At least one year of experience within a health, public health, education, human services, or community-based organization, or institutional setting.
  • Experience working in a health system and a solid understanding of public health delivery systems. This includes but is not limited to hospitals, health care providers, health regulatory organizations, community resources, social services, or schools in NYS.
  • Ability to prepare reports including quantitative and qualitive data.
  • A flexible, adaptive, and composed attitude with the ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency with computer programs including data entry into electronic tracking systems and running summary reports.
