POSITION TITLE: Health and Nutrition Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood

LOCATION(s): Brooklyn

REPORTS TO: Health Nutrition Coordinator

SALARY RANGE: $45,000 - $55,000

DATE: May 2026

SCHEDULE: Monday
- Friday, 8am - 4pm or 9am - 5pm. Schedule may vary due to program needs

JOB SUMMARY: Supports the Health Nutrition Coordinator with managing health and nutrition/food service activities of the program including reporting and maintaining information regarding child health and nutrition events and records, monitoring, tracking, overseeing and assuring confidentiality of health and nutrition records; working with nutritionist consultant to review individual child and family nutrition data and individual nutrition plans. Establish community partnership agreements in the Sunset Park, Bed‑Stuy and Bushwick communities and renew as needed.

This position requires travel to multiple program locations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate Degree required; degree in Social Services, Health Care Management, Health Care Administration or related field, BA preferred
  • Excellent computer skills including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to accurately enter and analyze health data to maintain health and safety requirements of all participants
  • Knowledge of community resources and skills to link families with appropriate agencies and services, preferred
  • Good understanding of toddler and preschool age health
  • Medication Administration certificate preferred
  • Bilingual English/Chinese or Spanish strongly preferred
PRE‑EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, Sex Offender Registry clearance, 3 reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, tdap, MMR (fees may apply)
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and comply with agency’s policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive Infectious Diseases certificate within the first year of employment
  • Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance Standards
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinate with the Health/Nutrition Coordinator to manage, and enhance all program’s health and nutrition policies and procedures in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, DOHMH Article 47 and other applicable regulations
  • Willing to travel to Brooklyn sites as necessary
  • Serve as a resource to staff and families with immediate and ongoing health questions and concerns
  • Collaborate with Family Advocates and Home Visitors in tracking all children and family health care needs and services, including medical, dental, vision and hearing/screening examinations as specified by NYC Department of Health and Head Start Performance Standards
  • On an ongoing basis, review and update all children and family health records, seeking to eliminate gaps in services and detecting and following up on any abnormal findings or areas of concern
  • Participate in Self‑Assessment, PIR, grant renewal and updates, program monitoring, reviews, Health and Mental Health Advisory meetings and other programmatic compliance requirements
  • Ensure appropriate staff (ex, teachers, cooks, site directors, content managers) are informed of any special health needs of a child in the program, and monitor compliance with health recommendations
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings as needed and multi‑disciplinary case conferences with staff and parents
  • Meet with families at times of parent preference for both immediate and ongoing health questions and concerns
  • Coordinate with the Health and Nutrition Coordinator on the monitoring of the Cuny Nurse Interns at sites
  • Report immediate concerns regarding trends in illnesses, accidents or health related issues to the Health and Nutrition Coordinator
  • Remain current in best practices for health and nutrition services for child care settings
  • Special projects as assigned
