The Lead Technologist – Blood Bank serves as a technical expert and key resource within the Transfusion Medicine laboratory. This position provides day-to-day technical leadership and oversight of blood bank operations, ensuring the accurate, timely, and safe performance of immunohematology testing and blood component services. The Lead Technologist supports laboratory staff in resolving complex technical issues, maintains compliance with regulatory and quality standards, and promotes efficient workflow and exceptional patient care.
- Provides technical leadership and serves as a subject matter expert for Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine tests & SOPs, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening and identification, compatibility testing, direct antiglobulin testing, and other immunohematology procedures.
- Oversees daily Blood Bank operations to ensure accurate, timely, and appropriate testing and blood component availability in support of patient care.
- Serves as a technical resource for technologists in the evaluation and resolution of complex serologic cases, including unexpected antibodies, incompatible cross matches, positive antibody screens, discrepant results, and other challenging immunohematology findings.
- Oversees blood component inventory and assists with maintaining appropriate levels of red blood cells, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate, and other blood products, including monitoring expiration dates, storage conditions, and product availability.
- Oversees and/or performs required quality control, quality assurance, equipment maintenance, reagent checks, and troubleshooting related to Blood Bank testing and instrumentation.
- Serves as a technical resource for troubleshooting analyzers, blood bank instrumentation, LIS interfaces, and other systems affecting Transfusion Medicine testing and result reporting.
- Investigates testing discrepancies, instrument issues, QC failures, specimen problems, and other technical concerns and implements appropriate corrective actions.
- Ensures adherence to departmental policies and applicable CAP, AABB, CLIA, FDA, and other regulatory requirements related to Transfusion Medicine services.
- Assists with preparation for regulatory inspections and audits and supports timely resolution and documentation of identified deficiencies or opportunities for improvement.
- Participates in the training, and competency assessment of Blood Bank staff, providing ongoing education and technical guidance as needed.
- Escalates critical patient care, staffing, operational, or technical issues to the appropriate supervisor, manager, medical director, or other clinical leadership.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and other departmental projects designed to enhance patient safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and the overall quality of Transfusion Medicine services
- Provide staff supervisory coverage as needed
This is a full-time night shift position. Working Monday through Friday 12a-8a with rotating weekends and holidays.
Preferred Criteria- SBB (ASCP) certification
- Minimum 2 years experience in a Blood Bank Laboratory
- Experience with laboratory regulations and/or CAP inspections
- Supervisory skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist licensure from the New York Education department
- 4 years experience as a Laboratory Technologist (or 2 years experience with a Master's degree)
- Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures
- Excellent technical skills
- Strong communication skills
