Role Description

The Substance Use Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based in New York, NY. The counselor provides individual and group counseling to clients with substance use disorders, using evidence-based practices and person-centered treatment planning. Daily responsibilities include conducting intake assessments, developing and updating treatment plans, maintaining accurate and timely documentation, and coordinating care with medical, psychiatric, and case management professionals. The counselor facilitates psycho educational groups, supports crisis intervention when needed, and engages families or support networks as appropriate.

The role also involves participating in team meetings, adhering to regulatory and ethical standards, and contributing to ongoing program development and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Clinical counseling skills in substance use treatment, including assessment, individual and group counseling, treatment planning, and relapse prevention.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build therapeutic rapport, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and provide clear education to clients and families.
  • Case management and coordination skills, including referral to community resources, follow-up, and collaboration with medical, mental health, and social service providers.
  • Documentation and compliance skills, including accurate record-keeping, familiarity with electronic health records, and adherence to confidentiality and regulatory requirements.
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills to respond effectively to acute needs while maintaining safety and professional boundaries.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in addiction treatment, co-occurring disorders, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented approaches.
  • Relevant licensure or certification (e.g., CASAC or equivalent) and compliance with state-specific credentialing requirements.
  • Preferred bachelor’s or master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related human services field.
  • Ability to work on-site in New York, NY, with reliability, professional ethics, and commitment to a nonjudgmental, inclusive, and culturally responsive practice.
