The Bureau of Communicable Diseases (BCD), part of the Division of Disease Control, is responsible for the surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases including foodborne, enteric, waterborne, respiratory, zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. You will assist the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit and the One Health team by providing dedicated analytical support to monitor and control multi drug resistant organisms in humans and animals in New York City.

Within BCD, the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit (ARU) aims to
1) conduct surveillance for and facilitate rapid response to high-priority multidrug-resistant organisms,
2) undertake epidemiologic research on the transmission of these organisms in the community, and
3) promote judicious antibiotic prescribing practices and infection prevention efforts by disseminating resources to NYC stakeholders, including data on local antibiotic use and resistance trends. The ARU is comprised of three

teams: the Surveillance and Data team, the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) team, and the One Health team. The goals of the One Health team are to understand and control the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms in humans, animals, and our shared environment.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

Under the supervision of the One Health team lead, this analyst will provide data support for both the One Health team specifically as well as the ARU more broadly. Their duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Building, maintaining, and strengthening surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use data from humans and animals.
  • Supporting IPC and AS for veterinary professionals including creating new and innovative resources.
  • Providing analytical support for whole genome sequencing (WGS) initiatives, including: o Coordinating with epidemiology, laboratory, informatics, and information technology teams to ensure proper transmission of WGS data.
  • Developing and maintaining routine reports to analyze and share WGS data.
  • Providing analytical support for ARU projects including:
  • Surveillance of carbapenem-resistant organisms (CRO) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in New York City and detection of community-associated transmission
  • Core ARU duties and data needs such as CRO case investigations, routine data cleaning, quality assurance activities, etc.
  • Supporting project management needs based on data analytics.
  • Presenting results of data analyses to internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Skills
  • Proficiency in Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), R, SQL, and/or REDCap
  • Proficiency in navigating computer systems; ability to learn new data systems quickly; and ability to comply with data integrity and security safeguards for personal identifiable information
  • Experience and training in public health, one health, and/or antimicrobial resistance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact professionally with people from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, critical thinking ability, and sound judgment
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English
  • Must be a NYC resident or become one within 90 days of hire
