Ultrasound Cardiac Technologist
- Part Time

Position Summary: Performs echo/vascular diagnostic Ultrasound examinations for patients of all age groups. Under the direction of the Radiologist in charge of ultrasound, performs a variety of ultrasound examinations at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail. Uses independent judgement and initiative to apply prescribed scanning protocols for purposes of medical diagnosis.

Job Duties &

Essential Functions:

  • Performs comprehensive transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) in accordance with established departmental protocols and physician orders .
  • Obtains appropriate two-dimensional, M-mode, color flow, pulsed-wave Doppler, continuous-wave Doppler, and tissue Doppler images and measurements.
  • Performs specialized echo cardiographic procedures as assigned and within demonstrated competency, which may include contrast echocardiography, bubble studies, strain imaging, stress echocardiography, and other advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures.
  • Assists physicians with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) procedures as assigned and within scope of practice.
  • Adjusts imaging techniques based upon the patient's clinical condition, anatomy, mobility, and diagnostic needs.
  • Recognizes normal and abnormal cardiac anatomy, physiology, and hemodynamics and obtains additional images when clinically indicated.
  • Reviews patient history, previous studies, physician orders, and other pertinent clinical information prior to performing the examination.
  • Identifies technically difficult examinations and utilizes appropriate alternative imaging techniques to obtain the best possible diagnostic study.
  • Recognizes findings requiring prompt physician attention and follows established procedures for communicating urgent or critical findings.
  • Ensures examinations are complete and technically adequate prior to concluding the study.
  • Adheres to infection-prevention practices, including appropriate cleaning and disinfection of ultrasound equipment and transducers.
  • Follows established patient safety, fall prevention, isolation, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.
  • Accurately enters patient demographics, clinical history, measurements, calculations, and other required information into the appropriate imaging and electronic medical record systems.
  • Ensures all images are appropriately labeled and electronically stored for physician interpretation.
  • Completes required preliminary worksheets and technical documentation accurately and promptly.
  • Maintains accurate records of procedures performed.
  • Operates cardiac ultrasound equipment safely and according to manufacturer specifications and departmental procedures.
  • Performs routine equipment checks and identifies equipment malfunctions or image-quality concerns.
  • Reports equipment problems promptly and follows established procedures for service or repair.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment, probes, accessories, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Participates in departmental quality assurance and performance-improvement activities.
  • Maintains consistent image quality and follows established echocardiography laboratory protocols and standards.
  • Participates in peer review, case review, accreditation activities, and competency assessments as required.

Required Experience &

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited program in Ultrasonography.
  • NYS DOH approved two-year program.
  • Certification in vascular Ultrasound Technology and prior proven experience.

Physical Demands:

  • Heavy lifting and bending of at least 100 pounds.
  • Long periods of standing.
