Part-Time Muslim-Affiriming Psychotherapist (teens and adults)

Refresh Psychotherapy is a Female Autistic-owned private practice in South Slope, Brooklyn. We are a culturally and clinically diverse psychotherapy practice serving New Yorkers. We provide both in-person and virtual care. We presently serve only adults but have decided to expand our work to providing care for teens. The vast majority of our clients use insurance to pay for their care, making mental health care accessible.

We are looking for a passionate clinician who has a clear focus on niche clients they’d like to work with and will join the team with ideas and excitement on adding to the practice. A successful clinician in our practice is adept at diagnosis, has the ability to think creatively and critically, is focused on delivering quality treatment to our clients, and has the confidence needed to support the growth of the practice.

About you

This is not an entry-level or “learn as you go” position. Refresh Psychotherapy is seeking a clinician who is already experienced in providing culturally responsive, Muslim-affirming psychotherapy.
This is not a position for clinicians who are looking to learn how to work with Muslim clients on the job. Applicants should already possess a strong understanding of the diversity within Muslim communities and be able to provide psychotherapy that thoughtfully integrates clients’ religious, cultural, familial, and community contexts from their first day of employment.

We are seeking clinicians whose understanding of Muslim clients is informed by lived experience, meaningful personal or community connection, and/or substantial clinical experience working with Muslim populations. Applicants should understand that Muslim identity and practice are not monolithic and should be comfortable working with clients across varying levels of religious observance, cultural backgrounds, racial and ethnic identities, family structures, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

Our approach does not pathologize religious belief or practice, nor does it assume that a client’s faith is either the source of their difficulties or something that should be separated from psychotherapy. We are seeking clinicians who can recognize when faith and religious practice are meaningful sources of identity, connection, resilience, conflict, or distress and explore these experiences according to the individual client’s values and goals.

While we value ongoing consultation and professional development, supervision is intended to deepen existing clinical and cultural competence—not provide foundational education about Islam, Muslim communities, or Muslim-affirming psychotherapy.

Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Creative Arts Therapy is required.
  • LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT
