STATUS:
Full Time – On-Site and Community Response
- Schoharie County School Based Crisis Counselor – $75,000.00/annual – exempt
- This position require rotating amongst the Schoharie county schools daily.
- $75,000 annual – exempt
- 37.5 hour work week
- 27 paid days off in a year 1 (vacation & holidays), plus paid sick time!

School Based Crisis Counselor is a team member who provides screening, evaluation, mental health intervention, linkage and follow-up of individuals identified to be in acute psychiatric distress. This team member will serve as a resource within assigned school districts, who respond a crisis event in person/telephonically and engage a client in triage and crisis de-escalation practices. The role of the School Based Crisis Counselor is to be a resource for school personnel and assist with crisis de-escalation, complete a mental health assessment (when necessary), maintain and assist clients with establishing healthy, constructive living patterns to reduce the rates of recidivism into acute services.
SPECIFICERESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
- Provides short-term crisis intervention and diffuses children while in the school setting in conjunction with school personnel; including comprehensive crisis assessment and suicide/homicide lethality.
- Maintains accurate documentation of client/ agency contacts in accordance with program policy and procedure manual.
- Provide emotional and crisis intervention support, complete mental health evaluations, provide crisis intervention, complete safety plans, and make appropriate referrals to resources in the community.
- Place outgoing and follow-up calls to families/parents, third parties, and community resources when needed.
- Makes recommendations and assists in facilitating the appropriate level of treatment, services and supports.
- Active listener that is patient, non-judgmental, collaborative with strong interpersonal and empathy skills.
- Ability to adapt quickly to various procedures and respond to high level situations with law enforcement or collaborating/coordinating responses with community partners face to face.
- Document all interactions in an accurate and timely manner in web-based software.
- Provides educational/ marketing /training presentations to the school and the community, as assigned.
- Respond to county’s request for community support for community crises.
- Function autonomously with the ability to take initiative and exercise good judgement and decision-making skills, particularly in a crisis.
- Can demonstrate a calm and reassuring presence in emotionally-charged situations.
- Communicate effectively and frequently with supervisors; promptly alerting supervisor of concerns, seeking guidance/support when needed.
- Good working knowledge of resources within the community.
- Ability to work with multiple teams; such as, but not limited to school districts, county clinics and family members.
- Proficiency in using computer systems and databases for documentation and resource navigation.
- Maintain all necessary certifications and professional licensing as dictated by profession and required qualifications.
- Maintains self in a professional manner at all times and adheres to the policies and procedures of the agency.
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines while handling sensitive information.
- Attends and actively participates in all required training, staff meetings and approved professional development opportunities to remain knowledgeable about best practices, policies, and protocols.
