Recreation Therapy Aide - Per Diem

Position Summary

The Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy Aide provides support to the Creative Arts Therapists and other clinical staff in the Behavioral Health setting.

• Provides recreation therapy groups designed to assist the patients in developing knowledge and skills needed for independent leisure/social activities.
• Provides assistance to the Creative Arts Therapy staff designed to help patients acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for independent, leisure/social involvement, adjustment in the community, decision‑making ability and appropriate use of free time.
• Is competent to monitor and document the extent to which patient goals are achieved relative to the use of leisure time and acquisition of socialization skills.
• Assists the Creative Arts Therapists in providing treatment designed to improve the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical functional behavioral as necessary prerequisites to future leisure/social involvement.
• Assists patients in learning skills regarding appropriate and helpful use of free time.

• Professional experience in Therapeutic Recreation or Creative Arts Therapy or an associate’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
• Minimum of two years of Behavioral Health experience.
• Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association.

• Certification or certificates eligibility as TR specialist.
• Affiliation with professional organization.

• Sufficient mobility and dexterity of both arms/hands.
• Must be able to lift or assist in lifting client from bed to chair to standing or vice versa.
• Must be able to respond quickly in an emergent situation.
• Must be able to communicate orally in an emergent situation.
• Must be able to use stairs in an emergent situation.
• Must be able to walk, carry semi‑heavy equipment and reach overhead.
• Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with patients, staff and colleagues.
• Must be able to fully participate in Crisis Prevention Training.

The starting salary range for this position is based on relevant experience. The above range represents a good‑faith estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

• Successfully complete pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services.
• Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
• Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen.
• Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings.
• Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

The Human Resources Department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
