We are seeking a highly organized, adaptable, and detail-oriented Assistant Controller & HR Manager to join a fast-paced wholesale footwear company based in New York City. This is a unique hybrid role designed for a professional who is equally comfortable working with numbers and people. You will play a key role in safeguarding the company’s financial accuracy while also supporting and developing the team that drives the business forward.
This position sits at the heart of the organization, bridging finance, operations, and human resources. The ideal candidate is proactive, dependable, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Role OverviewAs the Assistant Controller & HR Manager, you will support the Controller with day-to-day accounting operations while independently managing core HR functions. Your work will directly impact vendor relationships, financial reporting, compliance, hiring, and employee engagement. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, ownership, and visibility in a growing wholesale environment.
Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Accounting- Accounts Payable:
Review, approve, and accurately code all incoming vendor invoices. Ensure timely and accurate payments while maintaining strong relationships with domestic and international vendors. - General Ledger & Month-End Close:
Prepare and post month-end journal entries, assist with account reconciliations, and ensure financial records are complete and accurate. - Inventory Oversight:
Support inventory tracking, valuation, and reconciliation for wholesale footwear SKUs. Assist with identifying discrepancies and supporting inventory-related reporting. - Financial Reporting:
Assist in the preparation of internal financial reports and summaries to support management decision-making. - Audit & Compliance Support:
Work closely with the Controller to gather documentation and support annual audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements.
- Recruitment & Hiring:
Manage the full-cycle recruitment process for corporate, sales, warehouse, and operational roles, including job postings, resume screening, interviews, and candidate coordination. - Onboarding & Offboarding:
Facilitate new hire onboarding, ensuring employees are set up with payroll, benefits, systems access, and a smooth introduction to company culture. Manage offboarding processes as needed. - Employee Relations:
Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions related to policies, benefits, payroll coordination, and general HR matters. - Benefits Administration:
Assist with benefits enrollment, changes, and communication, ensuring employees understand their options and deadlines. - Policy & Compliance Management:
Maintain and update the employee handbook, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws, and support HR best practices. - HR Records & Confidentiality:
Maintain accurate and confidential employee files, documentation, and reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field preferred
- 3+ years of experience in accounting, finance, or bookkeeping; HR experience strongly preferred
- Experience working in a wholesale, apparel, or footwear environment is a plus
- Strong understanding of accounts payable, general ledger, and basic financial reporting
- Familiarity with inventory management and SKU-based businesses preferred
- Knowledge of HR processes, labor law compliance, and employee relations
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
- High level of discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive financial and employee information
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel
