Position Details

Assistant Vice President of Human Resources. Lehman College is the City University of New York's only four-year college in the Bronx, serving the borough and surrounding region as an intellectual, economic, and cultural center. Lehman provides undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional education within a dynamic research environment. Lehman College is seeking a dynamic and experienced human resources leader to serve as the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources. This critical role involves developing and implementing strategic HR goals that align with the College’s mission and strategic plan, enhancing organizational effectiveness, and promoting a positive and productive work environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategic human resource goals and objectives aligned with the College’s overall strategic plan and mission, enhancing organizational effectiveness and service delivery.
  • Oversee and manage recruitment, selection, and retention strategies for all faculty and staff positions, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Create, implement, and maintain human resources policies, procedures, and practices in compliance with College, University, and legal requirements, including Civil Service regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Advisers directors, managers and staff on employee relations matters, including performance management, disciplinary actions, and professional development. Develop programs to improve employee engagement and satisfaction.
  • Direct and manage payroll, compensation, benefits, and time and leave processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and employee access to self‑service programs.
  • Lead the integration of technology into HR operations, including HRIS (currently Oracle/People Soft, migrating to Workday), to enhance data integrity, productivity, and customer service.
  • Develop and conduct training programs for directors, managers and staff on HR technology, policies, and best practices. Create professional development opportunities to build human capital within the organization.
  • Prepare HR information reports for College and University leadership, utilizing HRIS data and other resources to support strategic planning and decision‑making.
  • Collaborate with Legal Affairs, Office of Compliance, and other stakeholders on compliance with federal, state, and local laws and adherence to University policies. Support inclusion and diversity initiatives.
  • Investigate and address employee workplace complaints or concerns, working closely with managers and exercising good judgment to resolve issues effectively.
  • Prepare and manage the Office of Human Resources annual budget, aligning resources with strategic goals and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Serve on internal and external committees, including Workplace Violence, Senior Leadership, and Support Staff Screening Committees, contributing to workforce planning, policy development, and organizational initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HR best practices, employment law, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems, preferably Oracle/People Soft.
  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • SHRM certification or other relevant HR certification.
  • Experience in a unionized, higher education, or public sector environment.
  • Proven track record of implementing process improvements and leveraging technology to enhance HR functions.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary commensurate with education and experience, $125,000 – $185,000.
