We are seeking an experienced Director, Workplace Benefits to lead the strategy, administration, and compliance of our employee benefits programs. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and oversight of comprehensive benefits offerings including health and welfare programs, retirement plans, and leave management programs.
The Director will ensure all benefits programs remain competitive, compliant with federal and state regulations, and aligned with the company's overall talent and total rewards strategy. This position will also serve as the internal subject matter expert for benefits administration, regulatory compliance, and employee leave programs.
Role and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Benefits Strategy & Program Management
Develop and execute the organization's workplace benefits strategy, ensuring programs are competitive, cost-effective, and aligned with company objectives.
Oversee the design, implementation, and administration of employee benefits including:
Medical, dental, and vision
Life and disability insurance
Retirement programs (401k or equivalent)
Wellness and employee assistance programs
Evaluate benefit program utilization, trends, and costs to identify opportunities for program improvements and cost management.
Leave Management Oversight
Lead the administration and oversight of leave programs, including:
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
State leave laws
Short-term and long-term disability
ADA accommodations related to medical leave
Ensure consistent and compliant management of employee leave requests and return-to-work processes.
Compliance & Regulatory Management
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local benefits regulations, including:
HIPAA
ERISA
COBRA
ACA
FMLA and related leave regulations
Maintain and oversee benefits-related documentation, policies, and procedures.
Partner with legal and HR leadership on compliance audits, regulatory changes, and risk mitigation.
Vendor & Plan Administration
Manage relationships with benefits brokers, carriers, third-party administrators, and leave management vendors.
Lead annual benefits renewals, vendor evaluations, and contract negotiations.
Oversee open enrollment planning, communication, and execution.
Employee Experience & Communication
Develop clear communication strategies to educate employees on available benefits programs.
Provide leadership support and guidance to HR and management regarding benefits and leave-related matters.
Address complex employee benefits inquiries and escalations.
Leadership & Collaboration
Partner cross-functionally with HR, Payroll, Finance, Legal, and leadership teams to ensure alignment across benefits and total rewards programs.
Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to benefits or HR operations team members as applicable.
Desired Qualifications Education
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related field required.
Experience
10+ years of progressive experience in benefits administration, total rewards, or HR operations.
Extensive experience managing employee leave programs including FMLA, disability, and ADA accommodations.
Experience managing benefits vendors, brokers, and third-party administrators.
Demonstrated experience overseeing benefits programs for mid-size to large organizations.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management capabilities.
Ability to manage confidential information with the highest level of discretion.
Certifications
HIPAA Certification required
Professional HR certifications (e.g., CEBS, SPHR, SHRM-SCP) preferred.
The salary range reflected is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets.
