Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: New York

Maior is an early-stage fintech lender providing working capital solutions to small businesses. The company is led by seasoned operators with a track record of building best-in-class risk intelligence for SMBs, combining AI-powered underwriting with deep, hands-on credit experience. Maior is backed by sophisticated investment partners who prioritize analytical rigor, disciplined growth, and long-term value creation.

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. They account for 43.5% of GDP, employ nearly 59 million people, and have created roughly 70% of net new jobs since 2019. Yet access to credit remains uneven: roughly 60% of small businesses seek new credit annually, and nearly half are denied the growth capital they need.

Maior exists to close this gap by delivering faster access, more accurate risk assessment, and fairer pricing. As the platform matures, we are selectively pursuing acquisitions and partnerships with other lenders and specialty finance platforms where a disciplined approach to underwriting, operations, and capital allocation can unlock meaningful value.

Who you are

You are a (Staff) Software Engineer who wants to build real systems that matter in a setting where quality, judgment, clarity, and precision are non-negotiable. You are comfortable wrangling ambiguity, being challenged directly, and defending technical decisions with clear rationale and evidence. You are not looking for a narrowly scoped role or a ticket queue. You want ownership, accountability, influence, and growth.

You:

  • Are structured, and precise in how you think and build, defaulting to first principles, data, and explicit tradeoffs
  • Take ownership end to end and follow through, with strong attention to detail
  • Communicate clearly and credibly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Build trust quickly through high-quality work, sound judgment, and proactive followthrough
  • Move with urgency without sacrificing quality
  • Learn fast and actively seek critique to improve your designs and code
  • Build and leverage relationships to drive alignment instead of relying on processes
What you’ll do

From day one, you will work across the company interacting with engineering, data, risk, and ops. Responsibilities will evolve, but will include:

  • Designing and building core backend services that power risk management and customer experience.
  • Owning critical systems end to end, including architecture, data models, APIs, and operational reliability
  • Translating messy real-world requirements from credit, operations, and data science into robust, production-ready software
  • Partnering with data science and risk teams to product ionize models, decision logic, and monitoring frameworks
  • Making and defending architectural decisions, including tradeoffs around performance, scalability, correctness, and speed of iteration
  • Integrating and managing vendor solutions, balancing our autonomy, speed, and capabilities
  • Identifying and addressing technical risk, failure modes, and edge cases before they become production issues
How we work

We are direct, high standards, growth oriented, low ego, and deeply detail-oriented. You should expect:

  • Frequent review and critique of designs, assumptions, and implementation choices
  • Deep questioning on failure modes, data integrity, and downside scenarios
  • A bias toward clarity and explicit reasoning over cleverness
  • Strong preference for simple, auditable systems over fragile abstractions
  • Close collaboration across engineering, risk, and operations rather than siloed execution
  • A bias towards risk management and sustainability to control our own destiny.
What we are looking for
  • Strong backend or full-stack engineering background with experience owning production systems
  • Comfort working with complex data flows, business logic, and external integrations
  • Proven ability to design systems that are correct, observable, and maintainable under…
