Duties Description
Under the supervision of an Information Technology Specialist 4 within the Digital Transformation Office, GSB, Enterprise Services Section this UI/UX design position will participate in the development of applications as well as products creating user-friendly, visually appealing digital interfaces by conducting user research, designing wireframes/prototypes, and collaborating with developers to ensure seamless, accessible, and efficient user experiences across websites and apps, focusing on both functionality (UX) and aesthetics (UI).
Key responsibilities include user interviews, testing, creating design systems, and translating requirements into intuitive flows and interactive mockups using tools like Figma or Sketch, with an eye on accessibility and modern design trends.

- User Research:
Conduct interviews, analyze data, and create user personas to understand needs and pain points. - Wire framing & Prototyping:
Develop site maps, user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes. - Visual Design (UI):
Design graphic elements, navigation components, and overall look and feel. - Usability Testing:
Plan and execute tests to identify issues and gather feedback for improvements. - Collaboration:
Work with product managers, developers, and stakeholders to implement designs. - Design Standards:
Establish and maintain design guidelines, best practices, and accessibility (WCAG) compliance. - Tools:
Proficiency in Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, InVision. - Principles:
Strong understanding of User‑Centered Design (UCD), design thinking, and agile methodologies. - Technical (Bonus):
Familiarity with HTML/CSS and front‑end frameworks. - Soft Skills:
Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and visual design skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Open Competitive: A bachelor's or higher‑level degree including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science.
- OR A bachelor's or higher‑level degree in any field and one year of experience in information technology.
- OR 60 semester credit hours including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and one year of professional experience in information technology.
- OR Two years of professional experience in information technology.
Promotion: Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 1, Salary Grade (SG) 14.
Transfer: Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 2 or Information Technology Specialist 2 Programming, G-18; OR in a title G-16 or above deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.
55b/c Appointment: This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and candidates are encouraged to apply.
