About the Job

The ACLU seeks applicants for a full‑time 3‑year term‑limited position of Digital and Technical Services Archivist in the Records & Archives unit of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This hybrid role requires onsite work three (3) days per week or twelve (12) days per month.

Records & Archives reduces risk, creates operational efficiency, and safeguards the historical legacy of the ACLU by stewarding data/records through the information lifecycle with a particular focus on records that are no longer in use.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the destruction of paper and digital records that are not historically valuable and are no longer in use.
  • Set and enforce policies related to retention, secure destruction, and documentation of records in accordance with business needs and state and federal laws.
  • Document, preserve, and provide access to the ACLU’s historical archives on‑site and prepare and donate historical material to Princeton University.
  • Provide research services to all ACLU staff regarding ACLU history.
  • Partner with Information Security, Privacy & Data Governance, and other teams to ensure information policies, procedures, and projects meet ACLU standards in privacy, security, compliance, access, and risk.
  • Oversee clean‑up and transformation of the current Archival Content Management System and create a portal for research that engages staff and provides broader access to archives.
  • Lead the creation of a digital archival program for historically significant records and the development of a digital preservation program for the ACLU.
  • Conduct a digital preservation assessment, create an assessment of solutions, road‑map development, and manage implementation of selected digital preservation systems, including metadata schemas and protocols for digital transfer and processing.
  • Develop data strategy, standards, and practices for Records & Archives, including metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and a new record group schema.
  • Document workflows for ingesting, accessioning, and processing digital materials and cross‑train Records & Archives staff.
  • Plan and manage digital processing projects and cross‑train a Processing Archivist.
  • Support active records in the legal department and serve as a stakeholder in records management technology strategy and other technology infrastructure projects.

Qualifications
  • Significant experience in archives, with relevant experience in technical services and metadata management.
  • Experience in creation and maintenance of records groups and local authority records (preferred).
  • Significant experience in digital archives, with experience implementing digital preservation infrastructure (preferred).
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, including collaboration and the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in a variety of archival settings, especially institutional, government, non‑profit, or business archives.
Compensation

The annual salary for this position is $ (Level

F) for a location based in New York, NY. Salaries are subject to a regional pay adjustment if authorization is granted to work outside of the listed location.
