Data Scientist, AI Engineer, Machine Learning/ ML Engineer
This is one of those roles where if you're right for it, you'll know pretty quickly.
I'm working with a well funded startup operating at the intersection of AI, biology, and drug discovery. They're building foundation models designed to help researchers better understand human biology and accelerate the development of new treatments.
Not a small ambition, admittedly
They're looking for a Founding Research Engineer to help build and scale the systems behind model training, evaluation, reinforcement learning, and model optimization. You'll be joining early enough to have a genuine impact on both the technology and the direction of the business.
Here’s what you’ll be doing:- Building and improving training systems for large scale foundation models
- Running experiments across fine tuning, evaluation, and reinforcement learning workflows
- Working closely with researchers to turn biological questions into machine learning problems
- Helping shape the engineering culture and technical direction of the company
- Experience training or improving LLMs, foundation models, or other large scale AI systems
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and excellent Python skills
- Experience with PyTorch, JAX, or similar frameworks
- A background in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, or a related discipline
- Someone who enjoys operating in an environment where there are more questions than answers
The role is based in New York and you'll need to be comfortable spending 2–3 days per week in the office. The package includes a base salary of up to $270,000 plus equity, giving you the opportunity to share in the upside of what they're building.
This won't be for everyone. Early stage company. Complex science. Difficult technical problems.
But if you've ever wanted to apply cutting edge AI to some of the biggest challenges in biology and healthcare, then it’s definitely worth exploring.
